hi! i have a i5 2500k cpu with a motherboard that cant be overclocked. i was planning on buying a z77 board to overclock it but when i was looking at amazon i found that a brand new z77 and z97 budget board are almost at the same price. then i thought i would just buy a z97 board plus the pentuim g3258 aniv edition and just overclock it. what would you think my pros and cons if i buy the z77 or z97? budget wise? and its for gaming and day to day browsing. thanks

edit1: forgot to mention im just buying the g3258 as a temporary chip. when i get some money for an i7 unlocked then ill buy one

Stick with Z77 as a 2500k is still a very capable processor, especially once overclocked -- and will be MUCH better than a G3258. The G3258 serves two purposes -- it's a great chip for MMO-type games (games that can only use one/two cores), and a temporary chip while saving up for a quick update to an i5/i7. It's simply too limited with its two cores to handle most modern tasks / any form of multitasking.

You might try to get a Z68/Z77 board used for less money.

G3258 is not even good anymore for gaming unless you strictly play MMOs. Get a Z77 board and overclock that 2500K. It will destroy the G3258.

Fixed that for you.

OP keep the 2500K.

Keep the 2500k, maybe try to get a used z77 board from ebay or something.
