Hello, I'm on the fence on building a dedicated computer to host some servers for me and other people.

Although, I don't really have any ideas on what a "server pc" needs when it comes to specs.

I'm planning on hosting a Minecraft server/teamspeak and more along the way. What would be the best option. In what should I invest and what are most important specs

when it comes to a server PC.

Thanks,

Sir Doge

lol its just a game and file server

no need to overspend on components that are not needed

a cheap i5 and cheap HDD is enough

I'd still recommend a low-end Xeon CPU, with a mobo that supports ECC memory.

That way if you ever decide to kick it up a notch, you won't need to buy any new hardware other than RAM.

Well what exactly are you going to be using it for? There is no use trying to tell you what to buy when we dont know what it will be used for.

I use an old laptop motherboard with a core 2 duo , 4gb RAM and it works as my FTP/CLOUD/VPN/NAS perfectly well.

You dont have to go buy a Xeon if you dont need it.

I went with an E5-1620 v2 for my home server, because I was planning on running a Minecraft server occasionally. Prior to that I had a 1366 Xeon that was not powerful enough to do crazy things on the server, it would run a vanilla server just fine but heavy mods or lots of TNT would cripple it. The E5 does just fine with 10k blocks of TNT going off and its probably a bit overkill, but buy one cry once.

I was a bit worried about power consumption, but I have 32GB ram with 5 HDDs and its averaging 100W of power over a month of running which isn't bad.

My E5 is basically a i7-4770 with more cache, and I picked it up for $50 less than a 4770. The motherboard ended up being about $100 more than a cheap 1150 board, BUT I'll trust it a lot more and came with features like dual LAN, crap ton of fan headers, a lot more RAM capacity.... Speaking of RAM, 4GB buffered sticks are dirt cheap, so I got 32GB of "server" RAM cheaper than 16GB of typical DDR3. In the end I spent less money than I would have for a 1150 system and have higher specs...

A quick word of warning, you going to need a beast of a Internet connection something with at least a sustained 10mb/s upload speed as a minimum for this to be worth doing.   (10 people)

running VOIP eats allot the more people there are in the room + mine craft can be bandwidth hungry too.

if you don't have the connection, its not worth doing

Also look on ebay at older dell workstation's T3500  or T5500 with a xeon , so much cheaper than buying all new parts.  will work really well

I ran a mumble voip server on a 3 meg connection without any issues. 25+ people on the server at times.

It all just depends on what app you run.
