New laptop for (female)friend

Hello!

So, a friend of mine is (finally) looking for a new laptop(She has had an cheap HP for 2007 with Vista up until now, but now it doesn't run Minecraft anymore)

I have really low experience with picking laptops and unsure how much power difference there is compared to price difference

I'm not quite sure yet wat she wants excatly yet(will update), but I have some ideas:
First of all, it must run Minecraft perfectly! (Yeah)

Possible she would want to use Photoshop, she likes to draw but long time since she has done anything in Photoshop (Because of fucked up computer I would guess)
She is not interested in spending money on an SSD

I think 15,6" screen size is what she would want, 14" is probably ok too.

She was kind of a little gamer girl before, but only on consoles, but there could be a possibility this will awaken if she gets a good enough PC ;) Gonna try to push her pricerange a bit

Since we live in Norway the best way to give you a price range is to represent it with some computers and you can look up the prices of those in your country :P

This is around the lowest: http://www.prisguide.no/produkt/acer-aspire-e1-571g-i7-3632qm-172350

And highest: http://www.prisguide.no/produkt/asus-k55vm-sx031v-173596

Any ideas?

Will update if I get some good answers from her on what she wants
I don't think she wants to wait to long, she misses Minecraft

Macbook air or a macbook pro?  :D If you really want her to get into gaming, try and get her to go for a desktop/build one. They have much better upgradability, and would most likely perform better for the price.

somthing with the richland apu and the 8000 series gpu  should be quite powerful and should not break the bank .... or somthing with an i5 and a geforce 640m and better gpu if cash is no probs ... with the i7 only few oems implement it properly so they tend to be unstable and overheat though if it is a haswell part it should be ok

(1) high frame rate (2) ultra graphics settings (3) cheap...>> choose only two<<...

if it's never been done then i'm probably tryna do it. (((((((Bass so low it HERTZ)))))))

The Ideapad Y400/Y500 series just got updated to the Haswell (4th generation Intel Core processor) so make sure you buy the newest when shopping for it. The processor should start with 4xxx rather than 3xxx linked on newegg to get the latest

Yup. 410p is smaller at 14", 510p is 15.6". Roughly similar hardware. I was surprised that it showed up soon after the Y500 released, but Y500 still has the dual GPU advantage.

Dual GPU is really not necessary, can't seem to find 410p and 510p in Norway, hopefully they show up next week

So does that mean the Y500 and Y400 is still better than the Y510p and Y410p in overall visual and performance?

Y500 is, since it supports dual-GPU (without ultrabay). Technically, Y400 does too, through an ultrabay connector. Comparing single GPU setup, 410p/510p are better due to processor, visually identical. Also, 410p has higher screen resolution than the 400. 500 and 510p have the same FHD resolution. 410p/510p has better battery life too.

Unsure whether or not 410p/510p support dual GPU through ultrabay. Probably not though, don't want to kill off the Y400/500 that quickly.

All of them come with 750M, Y400 also comes with 650M.

Personally, the appeal of the Y500 would be the dual GPU, and it's surprisingly not that expensive. Y400 is good on a tight budget. 410p/510p for the Haswell folks who can spare the extra $$, and want the extra battery life.

Since I am more of a visual-performance freak I will stick with buying the Y510p series. I won't be buying it yet until mid to late July. Hopefully by then there will be better laptops around that price range($1,000).

The Y510p definitely supports the ultrabay expansion, it's in one the models available in the US store.

Personally I am a PC kind of guy but if I was going to buy a laptop it would have to be a Mac Book Pro. You can always install Windows on it if you don't like Mac OS X. Also its best quality.

MacBook Pros are expensive compared to PCs and you don't get the best battery life when using it in Windows.

True about the battery life but you get what you pay for personally I don't know of any laptop that has such a nice display and powerful hardware in a fully aluminum chassis.
