So, I'm currently in the market for a graphics card that I can use to run 3 monitors, 1080p, without any issues. I tend to lose connection on my middle monitor every now and then with my 260X. I'm thinking of a 970, but I'd like some opinions.

Budget is about $400, using an FX-6300, and a Corsair RM650.

you best bet is the R9 290/X but your FX6300 will bottleneck any new GPU you get

but I have a feeling it hardware related issues with your monitor disconnections

check your cables and swap the inputs to see if the middle displays still goes off

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

If he's gaming, yes, but normal usage? Probably not.

Yeah, I don't really game. I dabble in TF2 and HotS, but that's it. I use one monitor for school, one for work, and another for just normal usage.

For work and school, what applications? CAD/CAM/CAE? Computational Methods? Statistics?

Tweetdeck, Skype, Visio, Office.

School is mostly browser based, but uses Reader, Word, Powerpoint, etc. It's Internet Marketing at Duke. :P

Thats a real major? JK JK, good on you to get into Duke.

I think you may have a driver issue or you may just need to refresh your OS install.

It doesn't take a lot to power three 1080p monitors. I doubt your card isn't able to power them. I would propose that it could be a bad cable or a bad port that acts up when pulled on or bumped...happens with hdmi a lot. The hdmi ports on both of my monitors are shoddy. I've switched the cable of my main monitor to dvi and it doesn't lose connection anymore...the other one still does but I decided to switch it over to my mac mini and go back to using one monitor on my main pc. The cable is a shorter distance and on the table so there's not as much pulling on it...plus I don't use it as much.

If your monitor that looses connection is connected with HDMI I'd switch to DVI or displayport.

That GPU is more than enough for what you're doing.

Troubleshoot in this order:

-Reinstall graphics drivers.  Use Display Driver Uninstaller and follow the instructions and run the latest available driver.  I'd recommend saving it to your desktop for easy access.

-Try using one of the other monitors with the same port/cable as the one that cuts out.

-If it has the same issue, replace the cable.  If it doesn't, try using a different port/cable on the "faulty" monitor.

-If issue persist, monitor is probably damaged somehow and you should try and RMA it/replace it.

I have a R5 Flex in my work machine, although I use only sub 1080 monitors (1x 1680*1050, 2x 1280*1024, but thats around 4.3 Megapixel vs 6.2 on triple HD displays) but I imagine it would not have problems with 3 HD displays.

That solidifies the case that you have some sort of faulty equipment.
