How to build a laptop and how easy is it?

asim1999

Dont worry, i am not gonna go out and build my own. I was wondering, how hard is it to build a laptop since most of the boutique PC builders do it (PCSpecialist, Digital Storm, etc). Do they need special machines or do they do it by hand, and how hard is it and how long does it take

You can't realy build laptops as a individual. And alot of the time boutique builders rebrand laptops.

They do it by hand but using components hard for consumers to buy, hence the competitive pre-built price.

I've disassembled a laptop before, I'm clearly no expert but I think the casing and motherboard would be the hardest to make. Maybe if you had a 3d printer for the casing it could be done.

You don't and you don't because it's too difficult and time consuming for the average consumer. Boutique builders have access to needed resources.

In theory it's pretty easy, get a case (they probably make their own, but that'd involve molding and shit), get a laptop screen , get internals, assemble.

In reality... Not so much.

The parts they use aren't really accessible to consumers

I did that before on my old Inspiron 1750 (dissembled and performed full transplant surgery on it)

I wouldn't do it. It can be done, but you need to have access to a lot of parts that the average consumer doesn't. And if you wanted to go with some really nice metal for the body, you'd need a CNC machine, and that's incredibly slow, expensive and wasteful.

You can buy barebones kits (chassis, screen, mobo, etc installed; CPU, GPU, HDD, RAM, etc not installed) and buy the extra stuff if you want.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

This should give an idea:

It's hard... You'd need to consider how to supply the power, how to get rid of the heat, optimal mainboard layout, etc...

Not to mention protoyping one is expensive...

you can do it I suppose. But not the professional way. There are guides on how to make a computer from a suitcase. so that literally means you can carry the computer, so that makes it a laptop.!

The laptops that boutique builders use are generally barebones kits, the chassis and screens come pre-assembled, then they just fit in the CPU, RAM and GPUs (mxm cards)

its not hard at all, my alienware for example is very easy to swap out GPUs, CPUs, RAM and Hard drives, and I could easily take it apart for upgrades
