Going All Out

Go to solution Solved by fatsumie,

ok what's intel's best processor

the i7 5960x which uses the x99 LGA 2011-3 board. I'd go with a asus x99 deluxe if I were going to get that cpu

I'm looking to buy a motherboard and I'm going all out. I need a damn good one too. Price is not an issue. I just don't know what ones are good and bad. I was told ASUS has good ones, but I just need a very good one. Thanks.

Processor - Intel i7 something (not sure yet)

- looking to get the best one I can find again price isn't an issue

No idea what a socket is lol

okay what do you need to know

-How much do you want to spend on your entire build?

-What are you going to use it for?

In terms of choosing a motherboard, which i7 is an important thing to know. The i7-4790K uses the LGA1150 socket, so you'd want a motherboard with LGA1150 and preferably a Z97 chipset.. The i7-5820K, 5930K, and 5960X all use LGA2011-3, and will need a motherboard with the X99 chipset.

Motherboards don't really affect performance. A $150 Z97 motherboard will perform exactly the same as a $350 Z97 board (unless, of course, the more expensive board has a specific feature that you need. Not to insult you, but you don't sound like you need a $350 board.).

Having a good PC isn't just about throwing money at things that are expensive. It's much more important to balance costs and choose hardware that's correct for what you personally need..

As an example, while an i7-5960X is a much better CPU than my i7-4770K, I don't do anything that would fully utilize the 5960X. If I bought a 5960X, I would just be wasting money, and I would most likely get performance exactly the same as what I get right now. (TBH, I could be perfectly happy with an i5, but I don't feel that bad about wasting only $100)

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

- looking to get the best one I can find again price isn't an issue

No idea what a socket is lol

The socket is the place where the motherboard interacts with the processor, and vice versa.

The i7 lineup has 2 different sockets.

1) Mainstram-ish: LGA1550. i7 4770k - i7 4790k

2) Enthusiast: LGA 2011 -3. i7 6 core and 8 core versions (5820k, 5930k, and 5960X)

For LGA 1150, I'd recommend the Asus Maximus Formula VII. I have one in my system and it's great.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-maximusviiformula

For LGA 2011 -3, the Asus X99 Deluxe. The more expensive X99 boards won't gain you much.

4790k @ 4.6 (1.25 adaptive) // 2x GTX 970 stock clocks/voltage // Dominator Platnium 4x4 16G //Maximus Formula VII // WD Black1TB + 128GB 850 PRO // RM1000 // NZXT H440 // Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013 (MX Blue) // Corsair M95 + Steelseries QCK // Razer Adaro DJ // AOC I2757FH
