Secondary HDD slow to start

SilentKiller

Hey guys, I'm using an SSD as my main drive. However, when I need to access a program or file from my secondary drive (WD BLACK), it takes a while and I can hear it starting to spin. Would it be possible to have this drive always active or something?

how long is a while? mechanical drives are noticably slower than an SSD and opening a program can take  up to a few seconds instead of being instant like an SSD

even if the drive was always spinning the heads still has to seak out the part of the platter that contains the data, which is not instant

but no you cant do that, it would also cause unnecessary wear on the drive

About three seconds or so. Same goes for when I begin to explore the drive.

that does seem very slow, you should be able to open basic files and browse the folders near instantly

Once I get it going for the first time, it doesnt need to spin up again for a while though.

Yeah.. Uhm... That sounds pretty normal to be honest.. I've recently switched to an SSD boot drive with 4 HDD storage drives and I have to admit I noticed mass differences in load times. But that's because I was unknowingly comparing SSD to HDD speeds. You're probably doing the same...

Nothings gotten slower, you're just getting faster :P

To avoid the spin-up times you could switch one of your most frequently run programs/services to the harddrive so it's constantly being used.
