Two questions

I have two questions and was hoping you could help me out on them.

 

1. How can I tell how old the hard drive I was just given is? It's a Toshiba MK1246GSX, and I can't seem to find anything on the drive to tell me how old it is. And I don't have a computer I can throw it in to check.

 

2. I need an OS for Apollo (which is in my sig, so check it out). But I don't know what I want. I would like one for music and stuff, but I don't know of anything that would run on hardware that old.

2. XP doesn't seem as though it wants to activate now. And I had kinda forgotten about Xubuntu.

 

Lubuntu, Puppy Linux or DSL (Damn Small Linux). You could also get a task manager based distro with no concrete UI.

 

Honestly, those are the only things that have the chance of running even remotely well on your computer.

Puppy ran well, but media was a pain in the ass.

It appears to be a Parallel ATA drive.  Between the interface, capacity, and seeing 2006 drivers for it, I'd say it's about 10 years old.    I should give you the parallel enclosure I have and never used.

Download CrystalDiskInfo, it will tell you the power on hours.

It's SATA.

Again, I don't have a computer I can put it in right now. It's only like the 4th time I've said this.

Probably about eight to ten years old, now that I think about it. The drive had to work for me to post your motherboard. You would be holding a 250GB Hitachi drive otherwise.

You could try beating the sh*t out of it until it tells you?

Maybe try calling Toshiba and telling them the cereal number if there is one

Toshiba drives do have a date code.
