280x vs 970

Go to solution Solved by lx_srs,

So, I currently have a 280x but I think I will be able to upgrade to a 970 in 2 years, I got my computer (280x) about 3-6 months ago.

So 2 years is the earliest I can think of upgrading so I need to make use of what I have bought.

Main Question(s):

Will it be worth upgrading to a gtx 970?

For how long will the 970 be as great as it seems to be in the present (do you think)?

Background info: I have fx 6300 and I play on a single 1080p monitor screen and a 600w psu. (Might be 550 I am not entirely sure, but on my shopping list if I go back and look it says 600w)

If that matters ..

In 2 years, do not upgrade to a 970. Upgrade to the most affordable card from that year, it will, guaranteed, wreck the 970.

Edit: Apparently 970 will be considered old by that time. Anyone knows how often they release new/special gpus?

I thought it takes 5 years or something. Perhaps that's only for cpus.

In 2 years the 970 will be fazed out by newer Gpus which will outperform it for the same price. Performance difference is around 30% - 40% but imo getting another 280x for cheaper than the 970 and putting it in crossfire would be much more cost effective.

In two years there is most likely going to be much more exiting products, for 1080p an R9 280X is perfect unless you start increasing those AA on the highest end games.

I think it works pretty great too, but 970 looks really tempting with the new generation stuff and so cold while still powerful.

And my 600w psu is sufficient?

It will take far longer than 2 years for them to release a whole new gpu series, they still have to release 980 ti ..

I will still be able to buy the 970 and it will be even cheaper, but yes it would probably be a better alternative by that time.

I've just realised that your CPU is an fx 6300 in this case I wouldn't reccomend getting another 280x cause you would be bottlenecking them. If you are still keen on the prospect of getting another 280x or a more powerful GPU in general, then I would reccomend you switching platform and getting an i5 :(

Sorry to crush your dreams but if you look at their release history its pretty much a yearly thing... So if that trend continues you will definitely not be able to buy a GTX 970 anywhere in 2 years time maybe one year from now. :P

I'd get a 970 today, and upgrade to a 980 in a year.

The prices should have come down a bit by then, and you can sell your 970 and use that cash towards a 980.

Then again, who knows what the market will look like a year from now...

In the future when I have more money I might get an i5.

Hopefully I will have a job by then or something better than a monthly allowance .. :P

Only reason I was able to buy my computer (parts) was because of a summer job, otherwise I would still be playing on school laptops ..

Yeah don't worry haha. I'm kinda in a similar situation haha. I had a summer job last summer and I'm putting that money towards a new PC since my current one died qq

  • 2 months later...

Ask this question again when the time comes for an upgrade because like other people have already said in 2 years there will be something better than the 970 for the same price.

While that is true, why would you visit such an old post? xD

And how did you find it?
