They draw power and convert it into heat, some can even heat a room during winter time, trust me, I owned a 1st gen Fermi card (GTX 465). :D

Yes, they are used to many activities, to increase gaming performance, or video editing and many more, but are there anything else it contributes to your/my computer??

They can be used if a program is written to take advantage of the high levels of parallel processing a GPU is capable of

Fermi in a nutshell

Mine ran at 90C standard, later on I OC'd the fan profile in MSI afterburner to force the blower cooler to high RPM so it doesn't go beyond 75c. Let's just say that my room would heat up instantly during the winter and while gaming my family thought I had a jet taking off from my room. :D

Majik - Yes spelt exactly like that because why not?

Norly they handle video stuff and do stuff the CPU can't though the GPU is a little more specialized for processing video...

For HD video playback, it takes most of the load off of the CPU so that it's free to do other tasks. Was introduced around the time of ATI's Avivo and Nvidia's PureVideo technologies in... what... like 2005?

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.
