So I'm trying to partition my 3tb drive into a single usuable partition but it keeps breaking it into a 2tb and a 750gb. if i delete the partitions it turns into 2tb of unallocated space and 750gb of unallocated space. when i refresh they do not combine, if i try to partition the 750gb section I get "failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space. [Error: 0x80042468 ].

why would it let me partition 2/3rds of the drive but not the other if it recognizes it?

Try Gparted to make it a 3tb partition

Hmm should be fine. Can you boot it up with another machine and format it over to a GPT partition?

unfortunately this is my first build and I only have a laptop so I can't. whats a GPT partition? I can continue installing windows and adle this later though if i need to

well thats whats happening but thats still confusing. shoukd i just just install windows then come back to this snce this is not the disk i am installing on.

What do you mean by "thats what happening".

 

Are you installing on other physical drive? Not the 3TB drive?

I'm installing on a different drive, i was just creating the partitions for the others. I'm following the instructions but I;m wary of running in GPT on disk and EUFI on the others when I dont ever really know what that means. I can change this disk like it says I just dont know what that really does

GPT is not a partition. It is a partition table with which the system keeps count of how many and where the partitions are physically located.

Default has for a long time been MBR, but it only supports partitions of up to 2TB. GPT is much more modern.

 

If you want a 3TB partition, you'll need to create a GPT to replace the MBR.

The error you posted and the screen it shows in the instructions is spot on. I can follow the instructions and convert that drive to GPT. I assume i can then make it one partition. What I'm saying is I'm installing windows on a 240gb ssd and I'm wondering if converting one of the drives will cause errors.

Well now its simple.

 

Just install the OS on the other drive.

 

I recommend plug in the only drive you are installing OS on.

 

Then reconnect other drives after Windows installation is finished.

 

They might create some unnecessary system files on the other drives.

Doing this also ensures that the recovery partition stays on the drive you installed windows on.  If you are installing on an SSD make sure you disable your page file on C:\ once you hook up your other drive.  Set up your page file on D:\ to save your SSDs a lot of read/writes
