Tiny ghetto exhaust fan

creativemagic

Hello all, this is my first post, so please forgive me if I posted this in the wrong section.  :)

A little back story, i'm currently in the market for a new fan, so I got this crazy idea to do this...

I got bored yesterday and decided to have a little fun. I took an old fan from an external hdd enclosure and wired it up to a usb cable and put it into my pc case... here are the results.

Sworry for the yucky pic quality of my iphone 3gs

In this pic you can see the connector that was attached to the fan.

I took apart a USB cable and soldered the wires together.  :P

post-169207-0-34521500-1420462474_thumb.

Here's how it looks like...

post-169207-0-32645900-1420462483_thumb.

Was only able to put two screws to hold it together because of the dimensions of the fan, and the way the holes are sized.

A view from the outside. I ran the cable through a PCI cutout

View from the inside. Used tape to keep it from shorting out...

That fan probably won't really move enough air to make an impact, mainly it would just make noise :P

Back in the old days with my Celeron 300 and Voodoo3, I ever do something like this because there is not much fan mount on the old computer case and I need to cool inside of my case because I overclock my CPU & VGA, so I ghetto mount some small fans on every ventilation hole. But for newer system, I don't think you need it at all.

True, it doesn't impact anything, I just did it because it looks funny, and for educational purposes.  Actually it doesn't make any noise, the fan is rated for 12v since it's now usb powered it's 5v. Can only hear it if you put your ear right next to it.  :P

Since I know nothing about anything I couldn't make anything like this, I'd be liable to set fire to my computer. Lol.

it would be better if you mount the fan on a stand to blow in your face for the summer using usb ;)
