Hello.

Is there any difference in western digital black and blue? Is the black worth the extra money?

thank you for replying.

Nope, no difference. The black has a bit more testing and a longer warranty. Otherwise, they're the same. Some tests show the blue doing better than the black.

Blacks perform better, use more power, are louder, and run warmer than Blues. Most of the extra cost comes from the premium name and warranty though.

Tests that show that Blues are better than Blacks are usually done with the higher end Blues which can be very similar to Blacks.

This looks like a job for.... @Captain_WD !

From experience most WD drives (and drives in general) perform basically the same. They just design them so some are more suited for different environments (such as a withstanding High-write scenarios for the Purple 'surveillance' HDDs and the high-capacity WD Red drives.). I'm sure Captain_WD will give you a much bigger run down on the differences.

Hello.

Not really a huge difference. I would doubt you would notice, the WD velociraptor might be a different story. But at the prices they sell them a low end ssd would probably be a better option. Still more expensive but still much faster than even a velociraptor. And silent. But even then a cheapo ssd will be twice the price per gb. But still much faster.

Under 1TB, I'd get a Blue, especially since its going to be essentially a storage drive.

Over 2TB - get a black. Blues max out at 1TB, and if you want a 7200RPM drive 2TB+ in size, then a black is where you need to look.

Here is my answer.  Western Digital has no excuse for continuing to have high prices on their consumer drives as the flood is long over.  Buy a Seagate hard drive as they are well priced and in doing so send a message to Western Digital to lower their prices.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I'd agree with that, if I didn't have HDDs from both die on me (got a couple of WD and seagate drives on special in 2009-none made the 3x MTBF of my original 85MB WD caviar that still works like new).

If the HDD is being used for storage, going for the one that has the longest warranty and will fit into your budget. I've did some looking around myself before getting my main computer, and SSDs are at the point where the mean time before failure (MTBF) is the same or higher than any HDD. So you will want to get the most you can out of what you buy.
