I have a i7 4770k and it says that it can support only up to 16 lanes for PCIe, so that means i can either use a 1x16 or 2x8. Can i still use a 1x16 and a 1x8? I dont care if it matches the x8, i just need to know if it can

which mobo are you using?

not all Z87/Z97 mobos support 3 way SLi or CF

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: It honestly depends on what you are trying to do. If you require 3-way SLI, then One card will have 8x bandwith, the second 4x, and the third 4x. If you are using a z97 chipset then you can use all 16 of your 3.0 lanes and use a PCIe 2.0 8x at the same time. The chipset handles 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes and the CPU handles 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes. It sounds like you are a-okay.

sorry buddy

3 Way SLi need minimum X8 speeds for PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0 standards

on the Z87 or Z97 boards

only 16 lanes are allocated for GPUs

the rest are for Wifi, USB 3.0 and mSATA or M.2

SLI does not work below 8x/8x. Anyone running/wanting to run 3-way SLI must use x99.

If you mean Crossfire, well it's important to use the terminology correctly.

He sure did

I just wanted to clear up some misinformation, regardless if relevant to OP or not.

I not sure if i read this right but i see he wants the first GPU to run 16x speeds and the second 8x

Z87 and Z97 boards in general will not support it unless its the more expensive models which use the PLX chip to become 32 lanes

Nope, unless specifically mentioning graphics cards, they did not. :P
