HDD for mass storage

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Blacks are high performance drives can be pretty loud.

Reds are the most consistently quiet hdd I've found which is why I use them.

Greens are like lower quality Reds. They less consistent in noise, perform a bit worse, and are a bit louder.

Barracudas are normal desktops drivers that are slightly slower than Blacks and a bit quieter as well.

If quiet is your first priority, go with Reds. They don't perform bad either.

Blacks perform the best in performance, Greens are the most quiet, and Reds are the most reliable. I can't speak of the Barracuda though. Never owned one and haven't taken any interest in them.

Greens are hardly the quietest.

Hey

I desperately need a hard drive for mass storage, I currently only have a 250gb ssd. I considered going all SSD, but it's too expensive. My goal is, to make this as fast and as quiet as possible, leaning more towards the quiet part of it.

I've boiled it down to these hard drives, but suggestions for other hard drives are welcome if you know anything about it:

WD Black

WD Red

WD Green

Seagate Barracuda

I would like to have steady performance, solid enough for gaming and or recording to it, but at the same time, be really quiet. I can't stand hard drive noise, at least not the noise from laptop hard drives.

Point out which hard drive(you may pick multiple) is:

Most reliable

Best performing

Most quiet

RAM: HyperX Fury 1600MHZ CL10 2x4GB      Storage: Samsung 850 EVO(250GB) + WD Red(2TB)      PSU: Corsair RM750 (and no, it hasn't blown up!)

MoBo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger                      Graphics: MSI GTX 970 TwinFrozr (1494MHZ Core)       OS: Windows 10 Enterprise

Unfortunately, you can't have them all right now. You have to make sacrifices in order to have certain features.

I've used a WD Green and a Seagate Barracuda. The Barracuda is definitely faster and the Green seems to be noisier.

The Barracuda is a good brand, and WD's Red and Black are made to be stronger - reds especially for RAID if I remember correctly.

There's also the WD Blue range to consider, which is what most people seem to end up using.

Sig under construction.

Seems like most are recommending WD Red. Will go with that one. Thanks for the help.

To be honest, a few seconds longer waiting for battlefield or other games to load won't hurt. As long as it is fast enough for a bit of recording to it, as well as gaming, might pick up two.

@WoodenMarker

What would be the optimal choice for me, a WD Red or a WD Red Pro? What is the exact difference?

Reds vary in rpm between 5400-7200rpm depending on load and are quieter. Red Pros are 7200rpm, perform better, and are designed for businesses being rated to be in rack mounts of up to 8 drives.

So normal reds should be better for me i guess. Thanks for clearing it up!
