780 sli worth it?

Go to solution Solved by Lays,

I sold my titan for 780 SLI, it's amazing, every single game 5760x1080 runs flawlessly,

I can't play crysis 3 with the highest AA on though, I have to use like the third setting, otherwise I think they run outta memory because frame rates go from 60+ to 23ish

(I think these are the average framerates I was getting):

64 man bf3 servers ultra everything, highest AA possible 5760x1080: I think fps was around 85-100 ish. Sometimes dipped lower, sometimes went higher. I think 1 single card was like.. 60ish? I can't remember I haven't actually taken the time to do a full benchmark on all my games yet.

So i just got my 780 and i absolutely love everything about it (its the gigabyte version) Anyways just out of pure curiosity would sli be worth it? I hear many different things about it both good and bad. So do the good things about sli outweigh the bad or is it not worth it?

Most games support SLI. Sometimes it's proper support, and sometimes it isn't. Is it worth it? That's ultimately up to you to decide. If you're unhappy with the performance of your 780(seems quite the opposite), then get a second one. If you're happy with its performance, then just keep the single.

It depends on your setup, and what you want. SLI'd 780s scale pretty well, and they will perform amazingly. However, it will result in increased power consumption and increased heat output. So if you can deal with those two things, and have the money, go for it.

It's not bad but a single card is almost always better when you can upgrade in the future as you need it and as new, more powerful cards comes out at lower prices.

Avoid putting 780's in sli unless you need the performance boost.

If you want 2 GTX 780s for fun and have the money for it, go for it. Otherwise it's an utter waste of money. Save the money and upgrade to Maxwell when it comes out.

And yes, SLI is worth it in almost all the recently released games. But Battlefield 3 multiplayer, for example, doesn't utilize the GPUs to their full potential. They stay at around 70-80% GPU usage simply because of the CPU bottleneck that the multiplayer brings. That is on DICE and Frostbites part though, not driver related from what I've heard.

But for most singleplayer games, yeah, it's worth it if you have the money. Otherwise no.

I get over 90% usage on my 670 FTW's in BF3.

670's are considered high end cards.

Higher end cards? I hope you realize the 670 FTW performs the same or better then a 680. I've had both and the 670 indeed performs better.

I would honestly like to see your constant 90% + GPU usage, I doubt you somehow go around the engine limitations.

I'm not saying that you are lying. I'm just saying that it would be interesting to see since so many are having issues with it. I might be totally wrong indeed.

So you assume everyone is like you and gets low GPU usage in BF3 with multiple cards? I play at 2560x1440 @120hz so my cards are always maxed out.

I personally don't have multiple GPUs currently. And I should have made it clear that I was talking about 1080p.

My points are invalid in your case but I'm pretty sure they still apply for 1080p.

I could try taking a screen shot for you while in game but I'm not sure if it would show the on screen display. If you know how to screen cap and show the usage then let me know and I'll post a pic.

Well at 1080p you wouldn't be using both cards at 100% in BF3, at least not 670's.

Listen to this man.  If your gaming on a 2560x1600p or a multi screen.. SLI 780s are so awesome.  At 1080p, barring 120hz refresh... a 780 sli is crazy.

Crysis with heavy AA all max... looks insane.  Running 60 fps (For the most part. :)
