1200p vs 1080p for gaming specifically. 

 

I asked on many other forums and people start arguing about black bars and media bars and pixelation and nonsense I don't care about. 

 

Is 1200p graphically superior for gaming vs 1080p? Much like how 1080p is better looking than 720p. 

 

FOR GAMING ONLY. 

 

If you play a game at 720p vs 1080p the 1080p looks undoubtedly better and superior. Will the same occur with 1080p vs 1200p?

Well 1200p is 16:10 and 1080p is 16:9, I prefer 16:10.

1200p basically increases the height of the monitor by about an inch. it wont look better than 1080. it's just an aspect ratio.

Same pixel densities, taller screen. It's not objective really and some games might not support it properly, leading to black bars.

Some people prefere a 16:10 (1200p) monitor and other prefere a 16:9 (1080p) monitor.

 

Most games will support both resolution, but the support for 1080p is more common.  But a 1200p monitor will be able to show a 1080p image with out problems, since it's not a ppi question, but question of aspect ration.

 

But 1200p monitor tend be expensive. You could probably find a nice 1440p monitor for the same price as a 1200p monitor.

1200p is better because it has more pixels and can allow for a fuller experience for gaming and allows for browser tabs, minimize/close buttons at the top and taskbars at the bottom to be accessible while playing games at 1080p.

For most games 1920x1200 is actually slightly worse than 1920x1080 due to HOR+ scaling. With this scaling method, the vertical field of view is locked, so what you can see up-down is always the same, it stretches that as high as the monitor goes, and then expands the image horizontally until it reaches the edges of the screen. With 16:9, as a wider ratio you will see more of the game screen than a 16:10 screen regardless of resolution. This means you would see more game screen even on a 1366x768 screen than a 2560x1600 or even 4096x2560 screen, because the aspect ratio on 1366x768 is wider. Not all games use this scaling method, but most do. That being said, any 16:10 screen has an accompanying 16:9 equivalent that fits inside it, so for example you can just use a 1920x1200 monitor on the desktop and get that lovely extra vertical height from 16:10, then in games you can set the ingame resolution to 1920x1080 and deal with some slim black bars to gain the slightly larger field of view from 16:9. As for graphical fidelity, as you increase resolution graphical fidelity will improve. Between 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 though, the difference will be negligible. You will not get a difference like you do between 720p and 1080p.

I'll give you my experience and opinion with this matter:

I have two displays, a 1920x1200 and a 1920x1080.

Many games have the locked Z axis, isometric games especially, like league of legends. These games allow you to see more, and have a wider field of view with wide resolutions and ultrawide resolutions. 1920x1080 will give you a technical advantage.

The other games behave differently and allow you to see more based on the amount of pixels your display has, 1920x1200 wins here.

However, 1920x1080 has less pixels than 1920x1200, meaning your graphics card has to render less pixels with the first resolution. Resources demanding games will be harder on your GPU with the 1920x1200 resolution.

 

The solution is to get a 1920x1200 display that has display scaling capabilities, so you can run fullscreen games at 1920x1080 with black bars at the top and bottom. This way you will have the most versatile setup.
