Hey guys, I have been unable to decide on a good graphics card for this 1440p monitor (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-pb278q). Or if I should just switch to a 1080p (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-vg248qe). Any us shop will do and I have a $450 budget on the graphics card.

650 dollars budget on the GPU alone? That would be like an 980 budget..

A 980 is good for 1440p

GTX 980. Any one you want. Best bet, get one with a pre attached water block, and water cool and overclock it.

sorry ment to put $450

A GTX 970. Still good for 1440p. Otherwise you might want to look into the AMD R9 290(X).

I'm not a huge high end AMD guy, so I don't know a lot about that one, but I can say the GTX 970 is great

Since you're going above 1080p, higher VRAM will help and the r9 290/x, gtx 970 seem to be your best bet.

Just got my GTX 970 and the performance is amazing. FC4 @ultra is so smooth, Skyrim HEAVILY modded is smooth, Shadow of mordor is ultra smooth with max settings. I can defo recommend it for performance.

My Far Cry 4 only runs at 45fps on Ultra :'(

But it runs at around 60fps with SMAA instead of TXAA and I like so SMAA so I guess it's okay. Still should be able to run it Ultra @ 60fps *huffs*

Really? I think I was getting ~60 and I have the same card as you, same RAM but my CPU is a 4770K, maybe that.

I watched a benchmark on YouTube and he had a 3570k overclocked to 4.4ghz (same as mine) and he got 60 :'(

GTX 970 with the 1440p monitor is good and if you somehow decided to buy 2 more monitors but 1 card aint pushing it. Get another 970. That's how cheap a 970 is and the performance of two 970 beats the 980 and the price of 2 970s is the price of 1 980 (+$90?).

970 at 1080p is overkill though. At 1440p it'll handle it well. But for 4K, 980 is the choice if you're gaming with it, 2 970s would work for 4K but SLI can be a pain in the ass for some games without any support or issues with it. To answer that, yes a 970 would be enough for 1 1440p monitor

A single 970 can handle BF4 at 1440p Ultra averaging around 45-55fps and a 980 can handle it about 3-5fps higher, do the math and see if it's worth it to get a 980 for almost the same performance without a noticeable difference. You can always SLI a 970 for the same price of the 980 but better performance, that's the bonus

Note: Not all games will have issues with SLI, so if you want to go 2-way SLI 970 it will be the best bang for your buck and I recommend you do it.

A 970 is good, but you won't be maxing newer games at that res on 1 970.
