Hello everyone and Merry Christmas. I'm trying to think of which gpu I should go with when the time comes where I want a new card. I'm tossing up between a R9 290x or GTX 970 both being the same price in Australia or crossfire with another R9 285. I anticipate your opinions.

My system.

I5 4690K

R9 285

Asrock Z97 pro 4

8GB ram

600w psu

Why are you upgrading when you have a 285.....

I would suggest 970 but you wont really be getting a performance boost

Given those options I'd go with the 970.

But in all honesty you don't need to upgrade right now.

I would hold off till the next major price drop/ next gen graphics cards come out. The 290x and 970 are barely not enough of a jump from a 285.

You'd be nuts to upgrade from an R9 285 right now while it's still an awesome GPU. I don't think it's very future proof with 2GB of VRAM, but since you have it, wait until the 2GB limits it before upgrading. Because a GTX 970 will probably be a midrange card next year at this time, so buy next year's 70 series card which will probably be something like a rebranded 980 with a higher stock speed.
