How does a computer power button work?

Go to solution Solved by dev893,

it's basically a jumper when you press the button it touches the two wires together

Hi guys,

I am planning a mod.

But I want to implement a power button (different to the original). Is there anything special that goes into a power button? Or is it just as simple as connecting 2 wires onto the MB?

Sorry for the nooby question never worked with any electronics in PC's.

Also is there anything else that I need to do for a custom front panel (USB, Audio Jacks etc.)?

Thanks for all your help and Merry Christmas!!

Basically, when you press the button, it completes a circuit between the two pins on the Mobo, its as simple as that.

so I can just connect 2 wires to the MB with a switch in the middle and it should work?

Thanks

and remember that the switch should be more like a button, NOT like this (http://uk.farnell.com/productimages/standard/en_GB/42256349.jpg) because if it's like the image, you must flip the switch on and then immediatly off, otherwise the pc will continue to reboot

If the flip switch is used for a mod, how to make it work as a power switch?

A power button is a momentary switch, that is the most important part. So any design of switch can be used as long as it is momentary. If it is not a momentary switch you would have to flip the switch and quick turn it off, as it functions as a signal not a direct route of power through the system.

Any switch can be used as long as it is momentary as Insomniac mentioned above. Push button, toggle, rocker, etc. You can either cannabalize an older harness or build your own.

You want a momentary normally open (NO) switch.

If you buy a normally closed (NC) switch, after you press it to power on it would be like holding down the power button and the computer would just shut off.
