Is the psp 1000 still worth it?

I'm currently considering purchasing a psp 1000. Coming from someone that wasn't their for the gameboy era (I'm currently 16 years old), the original psp had to be one of the most solid handheld experiences I've ever had. I remember having the psp modded, meaning I could emulate and run homebrew. With this in mind, is it still logical to spend 60-100$ on buying a psp, or should I take the risk moving to the vita or 3ds? What do you guys think?

No, even my PSP 2000 doesn't support WPA2. I can't log into any network with it.

I was recently thinking about picking up a Vita and I think it has some really cool games out on it but it is clearly a dead system. Don't get your hopes up for any new games coming to it. The only thing that turned me away is that I was only interested so me and a buddy could play a specific game and we found out the online is only ADHOC.

The 3ds is also a great system. Pokemon still holds up and super smash bros just came out for it. Not to mention plenty of other nintendo titles.

I still use my psp simply for playing digimon world 2003 ps1 (it looks awesome on psp, pc has too many artifacts because of the resolution gap) and some gameboy games.. surprisingly enough, I am the only one I know who managed to get it working as well as it does, mine only freezes when people put their psp to sleep while others freeze whenever you enter the tunnel below the first inn. (digimon I mean)

This may not be to much of an issue, but something I might need to look out for. I could always use my laptop to broadcast ad-hoc or wep.

I've slowly been thinking about the 3ds. I've not seen much out of the vita.

I don't get why they locked that system so damn tightly if they're not gonna release content for it, they might aswell give out the source code so homebrewers etc. can do their thing.

I'm a fan of homebrew, but I think most companies just think it's all about piracy.

for 120$ the 2ds might be a good choice compared to any other hand held. Just saw austin's review on it.

my personal preference would be a psp go but they're so damn hard to track in south africa it's not worth it for me. I like the homebrew for psp and I love the fact that I can portably play ps1 classics as well as some N64 and gameboy titles which aren't available anymore.

Yea it is a shame because it is seriously a cool little system that is surprisingly powerful. Hackers could definitely get past the encryption and get a hold of the source code but there just isn't enough interest in the system for anyone to waste their time doing that.

What version do you have installed? After I set everything to WPA2 and the PSP only works with WEP, I didn't bother to use is it. I sits in my tech drawers since 4 years now.

I should hack it too. It doesn't really matter if I brick it, because it isn't used anyways.

I got a PSP-3000 from a trash tech bin at on old job. if you plan on running homebrew and ISOs, get a MicroSD to MS PRO Duo converter. not the annoying 2 microSD to 1 MS. A solid 1 for 1. All in all, if you plan on playing strictly PSOne or PSP games on it go for it. But if you plan on wanting a more social(?) experience I'd go 3DS. Vita if you absolutely want to play Vita games.

If you are buying a PSP, buy a PSP 3000.

If you want to buy a hand-held gaming system, buy a PS-Vita.

  • 2 weeks later...

Seems like you really want the PSP, it's still really cool!

Definitely get a PSP 3000 though, its obviously better but you'll notice different cosmetic changes between the 1000-3000 (even the 2000 and the 3000)

2000 vs 3000

-Microphone hole on 3000 by the PSP logo

-Select,home,and start button shape is different.

-Ring around the PSP logo on UMD is much more thinner on the 3000

You can take advantage of the PSP and hack it. Depends what firmware it is though. You'll have to look more into that though, but you can always buy a PSP from someone that is

already hacked and a mem stick included.

PSP is a cool thing if you're going to play some older games. If you'd like to play not only old, but some newer games too, I'd recommend you buying a good no-name tablet for those money. For those money you can get really not bad specs! :)

Every psp I've ever touched has been personally modded by me. Gotta love cfw. However, I prefer the 1000 as it's the easiest to mod. if the scene is still the way it used to be, the newer models might have some issues with nodding, but I'm sure it's fine now.
