The Norwegian HW-site hw.no decided to test just how flexible the pci-e standard is by manually reducing the number of pci-e lanes on a gpu. So what they did was that they used a Dremel to cut away most of the pci-e contacts on a graphics card, plugged it in and tested it. According to them, this worked just fine.

If anyone wants to fit a 16x graphics card in a smaller slot, they do however recommend that you use the Dremel on the motherboard to remove the physical obstruction that would keep you from inserting it there in the first place, rather than cutting away connectors on the graphics card.

whhooot? there are X1/x4 slots with an open end. so you can plug a x16 card in them...no dremel requierd...

 

The Dremel makes it a lot more manly. Open slots are for pussies :D

I think Linus cut away part of his PCIe slot to fit a card. It's in a video somewhere.
