Some of the 290 and 290x come with the new Civilization, but I don't care about that crap. Wow, can't believe last year you could choose from Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, and Tomb Raider.

That might be semi tempting, but not nearly as tempting as Star Citizen, a game I was planning to get anyway was.

Ah well. The 970 is a bit nicer of a card anyway.

I must say though I haven't seen any price increases on their cards as of late. If anything they likely only lowered them for the holiday season.

That's the primary reason I ordered my 290x through Newegg instead of Amazon.

Now i'm wondering if the promo is only over on Newegg's site?

Maybe it's different in Canada, but even ignoring Black Friday to Cyber Monday, Radeon prices have gone way up in December in the US. Most R9 290's were going for $260-$280 before a $20-$30 rebate for most of November (including the Sapphire Tri-X and PowerCooler PCS+), and now they're $280-$310 before a $20-$30 rebate, with the really good ones fetching very high prices (Tri-X $300, PCS+ $310 before rebate). With those price increases and with the free games gone, the R9 290 is a lot less compelling a buy vs the GTX 970 than it was last month.

Um, that was the entire R9 200 series, the GTX 980, the GTX 970, the GTX 780, and the GTX 780Ti. So every recent high end card other than the Titans.

agreed. I just checked NCIX, and they want $510 CAD for a 290x tri-x... I'm glad I dove on my 2nd 290 when I did for $270CAD after MIR.

this means one of two things:

a) 290/x inventory was depleted with the Autumn price cuts

B) 290/x are no longer in production because the 300 series chips are in production.

I personally think its a mix of them both, but according to http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/anton-shilov/amd-radeon-prices-may-stabilize-soon-as-channel-inventory-depletes/ it was because of all the mining cards that were being resold on eBay. I have a hard time believing that is the sole reason, simply because Maxwell is now the more compelling choice over Hawaii unless 290/x sell for significantly less.

Yeah, and with some Maxwell cards going down in price (for instance, the binned version of the EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 has gone down from $350 to $330) it has gone from the R9 290 being the king of price to performance to neck and neck between it and the 970. I mean it was an easy call when you could get the Sapphire Tri-X for $250 after rebate and 4 games all of last month, but now at $280 after rebate with only the new Civ game that's a harder sell vs a binned GTX 970 with one of FC4, ACU, or The Crew. Last month it was always easy to find one of the R9 290's for $230 or so, not counting Black Friday sales. Right now the only deal like that on newegg is for Gigabyte's low binned version of their Windforce for $240 after rebate, but that one only runs at stock speed 947MHz when lots of the aftermarket cards available at that price last month run at 1GHz.

I usually shop for parts in the US just because they're so much cheaper. I didn't see the Sapphire drop that low, but do remember the PCS+ go down that low. It's back up now, but it could drop again in the future. Right now MSI, Asus and Gigabyte all have 290s south of the $250 mark. Which is astounding if you really think about it.

I agree though, they shouldn't have gotten rid of the free games.
