Why should I even overclock?

I have a question. So on my new rig (it's great btw ^_^) I have a 4790k. So I know this is a great overclocking chip & people may tell me I should overclock just cause I can but what's the point? When building my PC everyone told me that the 4690k would be MORE than enough for gaming. So then an i7 is overkill. So what would an overclock do for me? My system boots up in 4 seconds. Everything is instant, overclocking shouldn't give me more performance in games, or will it? Thanks cause right now I'm not seeing much that an overclock could do for me or if it's even worth stressing my CPU.

 

Edit: I'm not saying I'm not going to overclock, just considering how instant everything already is I am questioning if it's even worth to run my CPU hotter or if it would boost games at all.

It's unlikely overclocking would give you any tangible gains right now.  As time goes on, the ability to overclock will help it keep up with the newer releases though.

If you have the cooling to support, why not? 

And an i7 for gaming is stupid overkill. 

Yeah I will be streaming/rendering on the rig too and for $90 bucks extra from the 4690k it was kinda a no brainer to just get the i7.

 

Edit: Hmm ok so far it seems the only benefit I will get from overclocking is to grow epeen. LOL.

Are you showing your cpu off or what? You bought a K CPU and then you don't wanna overclock it and you hesitate to do it so?

Overclocking does boost performance in games and applications, it's so obvious it hurts my head that your sitting here saying no.

It's not going to give you massive difference but in some cases it will be noticeable.

Yes, it will boost your performance as long as the OC is noticeable.

I game, stream, (Twitch, Hangouts) and watch 4K YouTube at the same time on my 3570K

5800X3D - RTX 4070 - 2K @ 165Hz

I have a 4970K, and a Custom watercooling loop, and I do not overclock.

 

Why? Just because I have no need to at the moment.

 

Do I plan to? If I ever get a second 780ti, or buy a 980ti when it's out....yes....and it will be glorious.
