Hi,

I was talking with my friend a couple days ago and he said that I shouldn't go with liquid cooling unless I'm going to overclock as liquid cooling is better at cooling overclocked CPU's. But he says that if I don't overclock, I should take away what I've planned to use as my CPU cooler which was a liquid cooling and replace it with a fan cooler as it's around 10 USD cheaper.

So what should I do? Also, I don't really understand how the process of overclocking works... If someone could explain that to me that would be awesome.

My CPU is the i5 4690k

My CPU cooler is Corsair H100i

Thanks,

You have a K series processor. Why would you not?

So I should overclock. But I don't understand the process of how to actually do it. Can someone explain?

This might help:

Overclocking is essentially making your processor  faster compared to stock clocks ( The speed it came out of the box )  Overclocking involves changing the CPU ratio and Vcore Voltage these two things when increased in small margins or large margins can help you gain some high or low speed boosts. Overclocking depends on the cooling, motherboard, PSU and CPU. You should overclock on motherboards that have heatsinks on their VRM ( Voltage Regulator Module ) Which helps supply the CPU with the correct voltage so it doesn't damage it, and so the VRM's don't burn out themselves.

Also it's recommend that you overclock with a phase 8+2 motherboard this basically means how many times the voltage goes through " Phrases " which is like the voltage being cleaned up so it provides nice and constant voltage to the CPU. Also the liquid cooler is a must when overclocking or a nice air cooler, this allows the CPU to stay well cooler during the overclocking process so that the CPU doesn't burn up and turn off or throttle itself. Its also recommended that you slowly increase the Vcore and the CPU ratio by small margins to avoid damaging the CPU and to see if you get a nice stable overclock. You also afterward need to stress test the CPU to make sure when it's under load that it doesn't bluesceen on you. There are tons of programs to help you do this after finding a stable overclock then you get a nice speed increase.

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

You should definitely overclock, that's whole whole point of getting a K CPU! Plus your friend has no idea what he's talking about, air coolers are just as good as AIO liquid coolers. Unless you're going with a custom loop.

Okay, but this whole overclocking process seems really complicated even when looking at Linus' video about it (also Linus goes through it really quickly). I'm really confused on the whole process. If someone can list some step by steps of what to do and using what that would be great. Sorry I'm asking for so much but I don't know much about overclocking...

Also, could someone check if my build is good and ready for overclocking?

Unless it's for aesthetic reasons or you have lack of clearance, non expandable AIOs are pointless. (opinion) You get roughly identical performance with a monster tower cooler without the fuss of a loud pump or something failing. Not overclocking a K series cpu is also frowned upon. Would be like using a track car to go grocery shopping, it's a waste of potential and cash.
