HAF-X z87 Sabertooth 780 SLI Build

Eagles83

This is my first time posting on the forum and I figured I would start out by posting the log for my new build.  I took pictures of the build as it was in progress in case you were interested to see the various stages.  Originally I wanted to do a custom water cooling loop but I changed my mind when I saw that the 780's were going to use the same reference cooler as the Titan.  I like the look of it so much that I decided to just save some money with a prefilled liquid cooler and just keep the 780's on air.

The specs of the rig are listed below.

Core-i7 4770K    (haven't overclocked it yet as I just finished the build late last night)

Sabertooth z87 Motherboard

EVGA GTX 780 (x2)

16 GB GSkill 2133 DDR3 Memory

256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD

240 GB OCZ 3 SSD

2 TB Seagate HDD

Lamptron 4 channel Fan Controller

Haf-x Blue Edition Case

Swiftech H220 Liquid Cooler

Corsair AX1200i PSU  (I know it is overkill for this rig but I bought it when I had planned to do more)

Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition Fans (x2)

Corsair AF140 Quiet Edition Fan

Second Cooler Master 230 mm Fan for top of the case

Blu-ray Burner

DVD-RW Burner

I apologize in advance that these file sizes are a little large.

Where did you get that plastic cover that covered the connections to the power supply?

That cover is actually included with the Cooler Master Haf-X case.  It is a slightly old case at this point but that was one of the reasons why I selected it because it helps provide a clean look.

This looks really really nice  :). Are you planning on overclocking?

Thanks.  Yes I do plan on overclocking.  I'll probably aim for 4.5 - 4.6 Ghz as that seems to be a decent range for the Haswell cpu.  From what I have read online a 4.6 Ghz Haswell will perform about the same or maybe a little better than an Ivy at 4.7 or 4.8 Ghz.

Thanks.  I really love the look of the Sabertooth.  Asus started adding the same or similar type of shielding to some of their other boards but they all have a red theme.  I was aiming for Black and Blue and this cpu generation doesn't give you many options for that.

Hope the overclock works out well for you and that you got a good chip form the silicon lottery.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living to afford such an awesome rig?

I'm a programmer. I recently upgraded to three monitors for gaming and work and I discovered that this was a bridge too far for my old system which gave me the excuse I needed to build a new system.

Where does the blue glow come from? fans?

Yes there are 4 blue led fans mounted in the case.  2 on top, 1 front intake, and 1 side intake.  I toyed with the idea of putting in some Bitfenix alchemy strips inside but I thought it may have been too much.

I gotta say: I really like your style. I have a haf-x case myself and I'm thinking about getting a 780 for my pc. Do u have any issues with coil whine so far?

Actually I was very surprised by the results.  I can't even hear the videocards run at all.  This pc is very silent.
