Midcontinent Bringing Gigabit Internet Access

Night_Rider0

Hey guys this is older news but is awesome none the less and is helping move the whole gigabit connection further along in smaller communities not knowing the price i can not comment on this will update as info becomes available  but this should be a step in the right direction

and does this prove the fact that Google fiber is pulling ISPs to the current century in a metaphorical since of time

Probably every medium to large ISP is able to offer 1gbps connections if youre willing to pay for them. Virgin Media in the UK will do anything up to 40gbps depending on the distance between your location and their nearest PoP.

Google has done nothing new apart from offering them at a lower price (thus a lower quality of service) than how they are currently sold. You get what you pay for.

I would agree you get what you pay for and for a business connection you could get this if you are willing to pay you could have a fiber line pulled to your computer in your bedroom but i think that you are correct but i think the biggest achievement of Google fiber and any other isp is to bring it to everyday consumer at a price point that does not require a 6 digit income to pay for i know that gigabit is not hard to do but bring it to everyday consumers i am not say the gigabit connection is not the evolution

No consumer will pay hundreds of £ a month to get a gigabit or 2 because virgin is riding the exclusivity train. www.hyperoptic.com It's meant to come to my block early next year, will see if it's any good for the price.

Virgin isnt riding any exclusivity train. BT, and many other companies offer those speeds as well. Virgin just offers higher speeds over short distances.

BT offers half-assed service with no access to static IP for consumers so you can't even run a game server on that gigabit connection.

not exactly true you could still host on it you would just need a dynamic DNS client to update with changes in addressing

Google....just do us ALL a favor and buy out comcast, AT&T, and TWC. Then make them behave.

Comcast and Century Link. I doubt they advertise it, but give them a call and they will give you the options. Charter can offer 1gb down/100mb up to me out in the country, for the low low price of $1,800/month.

Portland gets it next year, at what I assume will be an affordable price: https://www.centurylink.com/fiber/news/centurylink-expands-gigabit-service-to-sixteen-cities.html

I already pay like $140 a month to comcast for HDTV / phone and internet 50/10 (actually get 62/12)

I think if I go from the 50/10 package to 100/10 or 100/25 (not sure which it is) it goes from like $60 for internet to like $120, god knows what they'd charge for gigabit.  Probably $600

I had century link at my dads house a few years back, and their pricing was really poor, and it disconnected all the time so I don't think I'll go back to that.

There's verizon fios near me, but it's only one street over.  I don't know if they'd be willing to cut up my street to lay fiber unless I could somehow get the whole neighborhood to sign up.

A.k.a pain in the ass solved by switching to virgin. Tell me how a parent of a kid that wants to setup a minecraft server for him and his 5 friends gets all that shit done on a PC bought in Currys...

I'm aware it is extremely expensive, I can about guarantee it will be well over $600, but what Yolo was saying is that gigabit exists just about everywhere, it just isn't cheap.

Call Verizon and find out, it can't hurt to ask.
