Terrible first build :(

Go to solution Solved by GangstaRas,

I've been using laptop for 6 years. Today is the first time I build my own PC and I got all my stuff today but the RAM. I'm kind of worried right now cause I somehow screw up with the components and connectors. This is what I did:

  • Unscrew and fix the CPU cooler so many times that I somehow feel I put hard force onto the CPU cover. Is my CPU still ok with it?
  • Bended USB 3.0 connector but was able to put it back
  • Bad cables management
  • I removed the graphic card (with force) but the whole thing somehow didn't come out and and the plug still stuck in the slot. Then I put it back but I'm still worrying about it :(
  • Some connector wasn't fully plugged. Are they alright with it?
  • What does 4x pin Peripheral plug do?

I'll be receiving the RAM on Monday so I don't really know whether my PC will work or not.

I know some of my questions might sounds silly to you guys but I never have any experience in building a desktop before :(

Okay as a general thing you should do is to watch the disassembly video I gave you so that you understand the process should you need to take anything back out and you should read the motherboard manual on the connectors and how to put them in and which ones go where and so on. Also it would help if you took pictures of the areas in concern so that we can assess the damage done

  • From the CPU is in the socket correctly, the force from a heatsink will not damage it, it's suppose to apply force onto the CPU so that the contact of the thermal paste and CPU is as vacuumed of air pockets as much as possible pretty much
  • If you bent the USB 3.0 connector so much that it fell off, then I doubt it will be functional. If it did fall off, I wouldn't say it's unfixable but to reattach it, better to go to a professional or just replace the motherboard
  • Cable management can be sorted later, bad cable management doesn't affect if the system will work or not but if you have cables plugged in and then twisted around so that it drags on the connectors then you are in issues
  • I believe you have probably broken the latch that is used to hold a GPU upright. I don't think you've broken the actual data connectors of shiny gold that line the bottom, so if that is ok, the GPU should still work
  • We dont know what connectors aren't fully plugged in but if they are needed connectors they need to be fully plugged in
  • The 4 pin peripheral connector is the molex connector. Unless you have an old IDE HDD or some case fans or a pump, you won't be using this connector in anything really

When removing the GPU, there is a little latch you must first unlatch. Some of the connectors on the GPU might be damaged. Also remove the CPU cooler, and re apply thermal paste, and set it back down and leave it alone. Make sure that connector is fully plugged in. The 4x pin peripheral connector is for molex devices

I would recommend getting the help of someone that knows what their doing, or watch a youtube video.

Force in not in the book of building a PC.Patience and concentration is the key.Did you watched a tutorial on building a PC?

Well we wont be sure if you've damaged anything until the RAM arrives but I believe you have never seen something like this you please......please......watch. And remember, you are never too smart to read the motherboard manual :)

Didn't notice that latch. I'm really nervous right now :(

I would disassemble the whole thing, and watch a video on how to put it together properly. Taking extra precaution and care

Yes but I mainly skipped to the main part.

You should have seen/read basics before hitting the button! But again, there is no point in moaning when the birds have already mocked the whole field.Start doing research on PC stuff.Ask questions from us if you are unsure of something.I know all that escalated hype when you get pc components in your hands. But in the name of PCMASTERRACE,start doing research from now.

Yes but I mainly skipped to the main part.

The main part is the whole process of it. You need a bit of patience to assemble the contents of what I assume is a personal, fragile investment. Handle things with care.

Like others said, check the GPU latch, re-apply your CPU's thermal paste after properly cleaning the already applied stuff off with isopropyl alcohol, and as for cable management, get plenty of twist-ties.

Again, as others have said, I'd personally disassemble it, and research things plenty while you wait on your RAM to come in, and then do a full assembly.

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

How are we supposed to know which connectors to determine if you need them or not?

They Power either gpu's or give extra power to the motherboard.

I couldnt start my pc withouth the extra 4pin power connector at the top left of my mobo

the back of the cpu can ususally take some uhm..force, but take a look at the pins on the mobo / cpu, make sure none are bent (very important)

The thing i would do would use Austin Evans build guide.  Its very simple to follow and easy

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

A little tip if your not exactly sure how to do something either consult instructional videos on the internet, ask someone who knows how to help you, or pay a professional to put it together for you.

Thats what I did when i build my very first PC back in 2006 was asked a friend of mine who built and sold computers as a side job to help me so that I could learn without messing up.
