yeah, you see you can use theme together, but not at the same time, linus did and episode about using SLI and CF in the same system, but not at the same time, i think you can reference that to your case

what i'm saying is you plug both cards to your mobo, and than plug each to and input on your monitor and swap between em, but as you said, it's not worth it your 280 is enough

Yes. You can use different GPUs in a system simultaneously. You can't SLI or Crossfire them, but it will work. Example: I have a 970 as my main graphics card(for gaming and normal system usage) and a 660 Ti for folding. It might be a little different though if you're mixing chipset manufacturers.
