Go to solution Solved by Guest,

ok im assuming u dont have a start menu

go into control panel (however the f u do it)

category mode

save backups with file history

bottom left "windows 7 file recovery"

back up to a network location, hdd usb or optical drive

like the title says, what is the best way to back in windows 8, windows 7 used to do the its own back ups of vital things and user files (though the precise name of it i forget), i have tried using file history but i like it very much.

cheer in advance

If you search in the Desktop control panel, you should find the standard backup utility. Also, if you click on the file history section, if you look around you should find the standard backup utility that way as well.

Whats the difference between "file history" and this other backup you mention?

I was told the best way to backup Windows 8 was with File History, however it wasn't really what i wanted as it just backed up some stuff.

Is there anything that acts like Apples Time Machine and makes a complete clone of a drive over the network periodically with versions etc?

Thanks,

Chris.

In W7 versions above Home, you can backup over the network. For W8, it's all versions. File History only backs up changes to personal files AFAIK. The standard backup utility still exists in W8.

with the method i just showed (windows 8) you can set up a schedule for it to back up what ever you have checked

in windows 7 you can just go to start and type "back-up"

i'm pretty sure you just have to press the start button and start typing "windows 7 file recovery" instead of going in control panel and finding it.

that's what i remember when i used windows 8 beta.

The start button doesn't exist in W8 anymore.
