I have a AM3 Asus since one of them came out and one of the DiMMs broke, but that was my fault. As long as you buy Asus or Gigabyte it should be fine. ( Never used a non gigabyte or asus)

Uh, that's not true at all.

@ $150 budget, AM3+ boards are actually way better build! Just avoid those 700/800 series (they are old.)

I would also avoid Asrock... FX CPUs need quality components...and those extreme motherboards are most of them made of cheap thin pcb and low Amps power phases.

990A-UD3, 990XA-UD3, 990FXA-UD3, M5A99X EVO R2.0, Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, are best boards for a limited budget.

I know people who still have AMD systems from 10 years ago, and the board is fine, and like people said already, manufacturer is to blame for a bad mobo ( unless it's a chipset flaw ), so Asus, Gigabyte and MSI should work, if they don't you are just unlucky

Btw i was that friend. I didnt say it because of a fan boy mode. I didnt see any great reviews for a £100 board and people were warding me after from getting it so i have chosen not to go AMD because of their boards.

The boards are made by different vendors, so the quality of the power phases depends on which manufacturer and which board you choose.  If you get something high quality like an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX or a Gigabyte board you'll be fine as long as you don't cheap out too much.

I have a AMD athlon XP stored away, from like 13 years ago, fully functional, I retired it only because everyone in my house already has a new PC.

It was overclocked to 2,4ghz by the way, it is on a Abit motherboard, An7.

I don't think that the motherboards are crap,I just think that any motherboards,x79 included, that are required to deliver 125+ watts of power are at a higher risk of having the phases, capacitors, etc overheat than motherboards that only need to deliver 80-95 watts.

My last rig was AMD based, and it lasted me a bit over 5 years (it now resides at my mum's place, still going strong). This was back before I knew anything about computers, and so it probably had some generic crap mobo in it, yet it still held in there. So, from that personal experience, I can't say that they are inherently crap.

Another note is that the compatibility with 8000 series of cpus. Apparently there are problems with those cards with mid range boards such as £100 boards which suck because i didnt want to go higher.

My 2nd system which I gifted to my dad recently is still rockin solid since 2009.  It was an MSI with the 790FX chipset, the790FX-GD75.  Solid board through out and still has the same Phenom II X3 with Kingston Hyper-X RAM and crossfired Sapphire Toxic Radeon HD 4870 1GB cards.  Only thing I ever changed on it since the build was an upgrade to an SSD drive and I put it in a newer Corsair Carbide 300R Windowed Case.

Not quite true. Asrock make the Extreme 9 which is hell for leather on VRMs and power circuitry. For the most part they just supply well thought out boards that fit into the correct category when it comes to price.

If you're going AMD, i personally would only trust a 990FX board. From any manufacturer really. I use a somewhat cheap ASRock 990FX board and it's not fab for OC'ing, but it more that does the job in any other place.

8000 as in FX 8350 COU i'm sure he meant.

If you're buying and and not getting an 8000 series CPU, just save the cash, not worth getting a 4xxx or 6xxx COU. Not worth it in the slightest. Either get AMD's top or it really lacks.

Just don't buy cheap MSI. I have gotten 7 RMA's in one year for the same board that costed me $80. It's a shame. It was a 970 chipset.

Very true. I forgot about the Asrock 990 Fatal1ty too, one evil assed board that is !

But yes, their budget boards (as you would know given you use the same one I do :D ) offer great value. I paid £78 for my Extreme3 which supports full X16 X16 SLI/Crossfire as well as all 5 SATA channels being SATA III. The only catch is the 4+1 VRMs, but that's to be expected.. Something has to give at that price.

That said, though, I have my 8320 @ 4.2ghz happilly chugging along :) I did push for more but the board did become unstable.

Yes, but @ the price point of a 990FX Formula, wich is way more better and stable.

But, if you don't overclock there is no reason not to go cheaper....for some of us.
