Was E3 really so much center on open world

Didn't follow it because of school, waiting for recap, but was the conference so much center on open world or it's just for comedic effect?

Last games I recall a really open world where it's not just maps connected to each other was Suikoden II & previous Final Fantasy games before the era of PS3.

The game i'm waiting for is The Crew. They claim that we would be able to travel around US with continuous road. That's going to be massively open world.
