Windows 7 install, can't use USB devices (mouse/keyboard)

Go to solution Solved by msikora,

fixed using a new USB and the windows 7 usb/dvd burn program. Just for future reference if anyone else in the near future has problems.

So I installed windows 8 on my new computer, but it installed the 32 bit rather than 64 bit. I must now install windows 7 64 bit in order to then upgrade to windows 8 64 bit (i'm getting it through my school which is why I am going through all this trouble).

I have win 7 64 bit on a USB, but when I go into bios and boot from my USB w/ win 7 on it... my keyboard and mouse disconnect and I cant interact with the windows 7 setup that is mocking me on my screen.  Any idea what I should do?

My Build

Corsair Obsidian 350d // I7-4770k  // Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H  // MSI Gaming N760 TF 2GD5 GeForce GTX 760 // Corsair Vengance (2x8GB) 16GB // Cooler Master Seidon 240m (push-pull) // Corsair SP120 (x2) //1TB WD Blue // 120GB Samsung 840 SSD // Corsair CX600M // Win 8 - Ubuntu - OSX (on the way)

Maybe a bios setting is preventing the keyboard and mouse from working before it boots to windows(happened to me before).

Both, I've used different combinations with booting from a USB 3.0 and mouse/keyboard on 2.0, Vice versa, and then both on 3.0 or 2.0

I'll check that.

Edit: don't really see anything that would effect the usb's in boot

Wired or wireless? (and remember to set "USB Legacy Boot" in Bios)

Trying with both, and yes it is enabled. Might try a different USB for my boot drive

Try connecting the mouse and keyboard to your front USB ports. Like the ones that are on the case, if you haven't done so already.

2 drives appear when i have my usb plugged in, is that helpful?

drives 3 & 4 are both appearing as my USB drive. Only overriding the 4th one will load the win 7 setup, the 3rd one brings me back to bios window.

BTW, why do you need to install windows 7 before windows 8? If it let's you, just install windows 8 and change 1 entry in the registry...

You usually don't need to have any windows installation present for windows 8 installation, just for the activation. (And while booted into windows 8, you can change a registry entry which allows you to activate. it basically is a check point if you had another windows installed before)

Thats what I was thinking last night, but I'm downloading these for free from my university andt he way they have it set up for windows 8 is weird.

Its update only, so windows has to be pre installed. And the windows 8 installer they have me download automatically detects whether the operating system is 32 or 64 bit, then the windows 8 update will install that version. I can't choose to upgrade to 64 bit. Thats why I'm going from windows 7 64 bit (because I actually can choose to have that version over 32 bit).

I'm trying a new usb though, so hopefully this will work

Yes, but you should be able to choose if no windows is installed. Do they come with a serial key?

My Windows 8 Pro Upgrade version is able to install on a fresh harddrive, i just need to fix the registry after the installation to make the activation work.
