Would go with like a 600-650 watt power supply. See if you can get an AM3 socket if you want to go amd. Look at the 8350. No reason to have an APU and a graphics card so just go with a normal processor.

That cpu is going to bottleneck the graphics card and getting an apu does not help. The amd apu's are great for its onboard graphics. Since your getting a discrete graphics card. It makes the on board graphics obsolete. Get a intel pentium g3240 or a amd athlon x4 860k

I would switch to an FX-Series CPU (and an according Mainboard).

You are using an dedicated graphics card you won't need an APU.

and you could choose a smaller (less watt) PSU except you want to run an SLI config later

that athlon x4 will def bottleneck 2 970's

you should upgrade the motherboard and cpu

Here is what I would do for the system

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/Kq23dC

The next upgrade he can do is upgrade the CPU to a 8320

I'm good at these things:

CPU: AMD FX-8320E 3.2GHz 8-Core Processor  ($166.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($99.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory  ($85.53 @ DirectCanada)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 290 4GB Double Dissipation Video Card  ($289.99 @ NCIX)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($79.99 @ NCIX)
Total: $949.84
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Much more balanced. R9 290 and FX 8320E will complement each other nicely. Faster RAM and a beautiful case round out the build.
