I noticed in another thread with pcpartpicker builds that Newegg has this R9 290 for $250 after mail-in rebate.

I was wanting to upgrade my son's video card this holiday.  I hadn't actually been paying attention to AMD prices yet. Is this a discounted price?     Or did AMD drop the price of their GPUs lately and this is the new norm?  Pcpartpicker's most expensive one is $280.

To put it bluntly, is this the one I should get because this price being that good, or should I stick around for the possibility of a better sale for Black Friday and/or Cyber Monday?

You should wait for Cyber Monday.

Or better yet, why not wait 3 more months for the 3XX series? (Than the 2XX series would go on discount like crazy)

I don't mind.  300 watts is kind of ridiculous, but the power supply should handle it.   It's 600.

You should wait for Cyber Monday.

Every one else's tone seems unimpressed, and yours is a direct recommendation to wait.  I think I might find myself waiting to see what happens.  Seems like $250 is the new low end of the price range and better sales might be afoot.

Has AMD announced that?

Its not unusual for 290s to be around 250 US. The Powercolor PCS+ 290 has been at 249 for a couple weeks now and its arguably a better card than the tri x. The Vapor X 290 was even going for 249 at one point, and that is the best 290 out there in terms of thermal performance, noise and factory clock speed.

I don't see the price of 290s going up, and once the 390 series is out in 2-3 months might even drop further.

Arounf 260-270 USD is where it's at right now without special deals. Used on ebay is around 200$.

Is it the card to get? I don't know. Personally I'm going for a 970 but waiting for a reference cooler.

Best Buy has them with the metal reference cooler (not a vapor chamber like the Titans though)

MSI gaming R9 290 was going for $230 after rebate a few weeks ago at newegg. Two weeks ago the Gigabyte Windforce R9 290 was $254 with no rebate at NCIX, and newegg had it last week for $222 after rebate

Not available quite yet as far as I know (at least online and in my local location), but OC UK has them, their own version actually, but  at a premium that's why I'm waiting.

Wait it's different than the titans I thought it was the titan cooler I was close to buying one too

You can probably get a nice deal on a 290 or 290x during black Friday or Cyber Monday and get the nice game deals amd cards have.
