2 way GTX 980 or 3 way GTX 970 for 4K 60 FPS?

Rockyt

Hello again guys, well the title is the question, which of the 2 options are better for 4K 60 FPS gaming? Also 3 way 970 seems cheaper the 2 way 980. THANKS a ton in advance for your time and answers :)

Obviously 3 way 970 is better, With more power, but do you really need 3 cards? I would not get 3 cards Just get 2 970's, 3 way's scaling in SLI goes downhill really fast, Use the money you saved by going 2 way 970's on improving other parts.

Also you need a decent motherboard that doesn't share too much bandwidth with other stuff like USB 3, M.2 PCIe and SATAe on the 3rd PCIe slot, If going 3 way.

But you don't really need 3 cards, The scaling is truly horrible on 3 way SLI...

3 Way 970's crush dual 980's to pieces.

That is if the scaling is good

It seems as.scaling is around 90%. I would still go with 2 980 if i could.

Then definitely 3 970's!!!!

But do you really need to spend $1500 to render pixels on your display?!

True but in Linus video about SLI you will get a better experience with 2 way than 3 way just because of the stutters that going with more GPUS bring

Maybe you should get 2 970's and if you aren't happy with the FPS then you can add another in to have 3 970's.

We don't even have the system requirements for GTA 5 yet, You should just get 2 970's, and once the game comes out see how it runs, I think it will do mid-high at 4k 60fps, If rockstar optimizes the game well unlike GTA IV

The hero can't do 3 way SLI, You will need the formula.

This build will cost wayyy too much! for what it's being used for.

the scaling is actually not that bad, plenty of AAA titles have almost perfect scaling.

The performance difference between the 970 and the 980 is really nothing. They both use the GM204 chip, The 980 is full GM204 and 970 is tuned down a bit.

I believe the 4790k doesn't have enough pci-e lanes to do triple, as it only has 16 I believe, might be wrong though

Hero won't do 3 way SLI. Would need to step up to a higher end motherboard. I'd say if you have the money just get 2 980s. Triple SLI is just asking for scaling issues

I truthfully would go for one of those 8gb 290x since its heaps of room, also 512 bus would help too in 4k

get two of those bad boys for just over a grand

Its all about those volumetric clouds

3x 970's might perform better in some games. But in some they won't, and you'll probably end up with lower minimum framerates. 3 970's also require more power, are louder and hotter, and you have to have the CPU lanes and motherboard slots to support it.

If you are planning to play 4K at 60fps with any of these setups you had damn well better prepared to turn some settings down. 4K gaming at 60fps is ridiculously hard.
