wifi from house to shop

wolfgang

My parents want to get WiFi out in the shop behind the house but it is at the edge of the WiFi range and if you go inside the metal walls block it completely.

Shop is about 100-150 feet from the house.

What would be the best option?

My mom was looking at wireless range extenders but i am thinking it wont work.

Would running buried cat 5 be a reasonable option or would it be too far?

Yep, underground cable would be best. Outdoor rated cat5e inside some conduit would be advisable. If you are looking at a wireless solution, I would grab a pair of Ubiquiti Nanostations to link the gap.

Cat 5e would work, but might as well get Cat 6, doesn't really cost all that more.  Extender's will work but you'd probably need at least 2.

You should be able to check it with the printing on the cable sleeve.

Definitely.  Unless burying it costs a lot.  Get at least Cat 5e/6 (Gigabit) so you only have to lay the cable once.  Cat 5 is limited to 100Mbps and isn't really future proof.  Since you're gonna lay it might as well get something that works for a longer period of time.

Once laid you can either plug the cable directly to a PC in the shop, or set a router in the shop with no signal loss.
