I may be in the "market" to change or consider what I use to listen to music when I'm about and not on a screen. What I currently use is a PSP 3000.  What I want:

  • 8 GB minimum
  • Very good battery life - 15+ hours
  • Ease of use
  • - Putting music onto device
  • - If there are multiple folders (like the PSP) - being able to shuffle through ALL the music or being able to only play certain 'folders' easily.
  • - Organizing it
  • -- No arbitrary limit to the amount of songs a folder can hold (PSP)
  • Tactile buttons
  • I don't care for looking at videos or pictures, but the screen size should be reasonable - not an inch . . .
  • Easily chargeable preferably by USB.
  • Will fit in my pocket - (added @ 12:16 AM CST)

What else?

I personally just use my phone for music.

There are many android based music players available like the Samsung Galaxy Player which come in many sizes.

edit : Just realised that the Samsung Galaxy Player is discontinued. Whoops lol.

Personally I avoid iPods because they don't play .flac(and I don't want to convert everything to .alac) and I HATE iTunes(syncing and everything is really annoying).

Sandisk sounds good to me.

For music, I think an ipod is best. I have tried a couple other MP3 players such as a Zune and Sansa Fuze, but they were pretty bad compared to an ipod. The Fuze was finicky and playback quality was pretty horrible. The Zune had really good playback quality, but it always "crashed" after a couple days if I completely loaded it. Not sure if that was a problem with just mine.

And ipod Nano would be they way to go. Itunes is not the best but, it is pretty nice for keeping your music in order.

They have super battery life, tactile buttons(on the older models), and you can get it in over 8GB size.

Yeah actually that would be the best. They have a 30+ hour battery life and so much space. $230 on Amazon for a 160GB

I would say get the iPod Classic.  Mine is 5 years old now and the battery almost never dies on it, when it wants to die it just jumps back up to like 30% and stays there for a few more days.  Plus you can use it as an external hard drive if you need to.

An iPod is a nice choice if you don't mind using iTunes. Also, if you demand browsing the music by the folders, then the iPod is a no-go as well as many other music players -- in cases if you have mess with ID3 tags.

And check out the COWONs as well. Their mp3 players are awesome. Especially the Cowon D20, the battery is a BEAST! I used to own the first gen, Cowon D2. I wasn't using it much back then, so I end up charging it only once per 1.5-2 months. And it was able of "only" 50 hours music playtime. This new model is capable of 90 hours! It eats pretty much every format, the audio quality is great and you can browse the music by folders as well. Pretty nice device, be sure to have a look at it.

An iPod touch is a great choice. I have had several versions dating back to the first generation, and I have not been disappointed.

iPod touch battery life is relatively crap from what I've seen and I have an 8gig one and a 32 gig one. The iPod classic is the best option to me because of the great battery life and capacity. I use my 120gig classic as my main music device; I connect it to my car and when I'm mobile with the battery lasting well over 15 hours a charge.

Wiki says the Touch lasts about 40 hours. It may not be the length of the classic but a little longer than original Gameboy life and much longer than the PSP seems reasonable.

40 hours of doing what exactly? When the screen is active the battery begins to drain big time. 40 doesn't seem right to me.

40 hours of audio, 7 of video. Won't put any vid on it, 40 seems plenty to me, doesn't it?

You should be fine then. Just remember that you're paying for the additional features and touchscreen. I would still recommend the iPod classic because it does last longer on a charge and it focuses more on capacity than on non music related features, especially if you're just going to be using it just as a music playback device. If you get the touch I hope you enjoy it lol :P
