So at my mom's work they have an old Dell computer that they are replacing. It has a Core2Quad q6600.

I was wondering what the best thing to do with it would be.

I was thinking I could get a new mobo, a Hyper 212 EVO and overclock, and put my spare HD7750 in it to use as a secondary rig.

Can you guys/gals tell me your thoughts as to what I should do?

Chronos (emulation station)

You're headed in the right direction. The platform still has potential.

Do you have any clue what mobo would be best for me to choose? I was looking around, but I didn't know what to look for.

Fold with it! :D

I was actually thinking about doing that  :D . I am using my craptop as well as my main rig to fold RN.

Asus P5Q anything. They are the best I heard. I have a Nvidia nForce 680i in my system though. Still great as well.

Home server of some sort perhaps. It would be pretty good for most file storage and things like that, as well as some basic Plex stuff (probably not transcoding however).

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

Garrus - HP Stream 11

From some of the stuff I read, it said the 680i chipset wasn't the best for overclocking the C2Q's. I'll probably end up purchasing something like this

It isn't. I can't hit 3Ghz on this chip with this board. I mean, it's reachable, but it's very unstable. 1.4V can't be delivered. And the board in the link can't overclock.

Sell or trade me the cpu.  I need an upgrade on an old rig from a Core 2 Duo.

I'd buy some red drives and turn it into a NAS. It won't have the smallest electric footprint but you at least found a good use for older hardware.

Mobile Devices I ASUS Zenbook UX31E I Nexus 7 (2013) I Nexus 5 32GB (red)

I'm truly torn between your suggestion and OC it for a 2nd rig. I'll have to give it some thought

It's actually still good for gaming.

Look for a board with a P or an X for its chipset (Intel chipsets) or look for a 7xx or 6xx as the chipset (NVidia.)

True. Maybe it could be a nice LAN box if the OP is into that sort of thing

I mean, it can still run a GTX 970 without bottlenecking. Don't know about a 980 though.

I just realized it's a C2Q not a C2D. I thought it was a duo.

Then by all means, go for it. Do you plan to SLI with it some day? keep in mind there is only 1 full size PCIe x16 slot.

I will most likely not go SLI, as by the time I have the money for a second card, the C2Q will be far outdated.

Yes, I know. What I'm saying is it will be BY THE TIME I have the money to spend on an SLI setup.
