jonyman23

So I bought this a little bit less than a year ago and Christmas is right around the corner so I am looking to upgrade. I originally planned to get a second Gigabyte 770 and a PB278Q 1440p monitor.

Now that the 970 is out, I am really wondering if it will be that much better to get only 1 970 instead of 2 770's.

Also will a second 970 do well enough on 1440p?

I am also trying to see which 970 is the best one to get, I am thinking the Gigabyte 970 G1 but give me your opinion please

a single 970 should be enough for 1440p. and I think tis better than 2 770's

a 970 will do better with higher resolution textures, but I'd probably go with the 2 770s.  Makes more sense to me. Unless of course power is an issue, which is one reason why I'd go with the 970/

EDIT: Ignore me, look at @Fulgrim's post.

770s aren't exactly weak.  If you check their specs, they have a few less cores than a 970, and their only real drawback is the amount of VRAM they have.

Yeah but they are the weaker card in this scenario :D (did not mean to offend anyone with 770's)

More powerful single card as a rule of thumb is better than 2 weaker cards in SLI/Crossfire. Whilst running dual cards may beat the more powerful single card in certain scenarios, running one card removes compatibility issues with running multiple cards, plus it will use less watts. It also means less heat generated. And presents you with the option for SLI/Crossfire in the future if you so choose to.

Try and get a 256GB SSD & GTX970.

Sell the 770 and get a 970. The price difference between a 970 and 770 (at least here) makes it unreasonable to go SLI with two 770s vs one 970.

EDIT: Just looked at prices for you and really you don't pay much more for a 970 than a 770, though the 970 is much more powerful. Don't get a second 770. Sell your old one and get the 970, maybe down the road a second one of those. Great bang for the buck.

Thanks, I am going to sell the 770, and get the 970, if I find myself with a surplus of $$ than I'll get the 980(dreaming).

and EVENTUALLY get a pb278q 1440p

I personally would stick it out until another gpu series comes out, the 770 is still a good card.

The speculation of the r9 390x is really interesting :P

I would do something like that but it's christmas, which means gifts so getting nothing is definitely not the best option

Buy yourslef a small gift if you want then. If speculations are true the Bermuda will kick the maxwell so hard. In raw performance anyway. Will Defenetly be more tdp and run more hot.
