Shall I do a CPU showdown for gaming?

harrynowl

well I could do cpu benchmarks at "standardized" clocks etc. but I can't do 3 different clock levels for the games. I'm one person and there's loads of cpus :P

Well, I'd at least do the 4300/6300/8350 at stock and at a modest overclock (achievable with something like a hyper 212); as well as a 4690k at stock and a modest oc.

Yes, it adds a lot more work, but a comparison that doesn't take overclocking into account isn't really conclusive.

I'm rolling a Nepton 280L. Overclocking won't be a problem these are my good chips ;)

Well, I meant more that you should do an average overclock achievable by something like a hyper212, as I think the general consensus by most people is to go with an i5/i7 + a light cooler > an 8350 + heavy duty cooler.

True, but all these will be run at sensible overclocks, as much as I'd like to do 5Ghz gaming on some of the AMDs and the P4.

amd overdrive run the cpu's at overclocked and just bump the multi down so 4, 3.5 and 3ghz on the phenoms and 4.5, 4 and 3.5ghz on the fx's, takes a few seconds, though tbh in bf3 and bf4 where i tested it never made any difference unless you go down to 1.6-2ghz so yeah..

I see a P4 on that list... I'm interested in how that will handle...

Can you add Planetside 2 in your list of games that you're gonna use to test? Its free to play MMO. Also, it is one of those game where it's a cpu hog, so it would be a good benchmark.

I could try it. Only problem with the multiplayer games is the consistency. I'd probably have to take averages from multiple runs.

would love to see new benchmarks on bf3

BTW: i'm buying myself a new rig in a month, will be using i3-4130 and r9 280. How much fps do u think I'll get in bf3 @1080p?

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

probably fairly well, 280 is the same as the 7950 I use to play bf3 and my cpu has a fairly easy time with it too.

in 64p maybe a bottleneck?

also add context to your signature so it makes sense

what do you mean with ''in 64p maybe a bottleneck''?

added this in my sig because of the ''those won't overclock on a potato'' part. nothing meant with it, its just funny

On a 64 player server the i3 might be a bottleneck.

Although, with a 280 in BF3 you should still easily get 60fps.

yes, because of the 2 cores, right? I thought about the fx-6300 but I think that overall the i3 is a better choice and also i'm not going to upgrade in maybe 4 years

Well, its 2 cores + 2 threads, and as such it performs better than a standard dual core. I'd agree with that decision. I'd take an i3 over a 6300 in a gaming system anyday.

Well it seems that "yes" is quite a popular choice. I'll start working on that this week as I'm off college :)

Just note... this will be a long project
