Motherboards don't matter that much for Intel Chipsets, just pick one that has the features you like. Keep in mind the CPUs that work with the X99 chipset before buying one.

Things to consider before getting x99.

  1. Are you even getting a x99 system
  2. If you are, why?
  3. Are you sure you need x99

Tips for a motherboard:

  • Make sure it's the right socket
  • Get the one that looks good
  • Make sure it includes the features you want. (WiFi, Better onboard audio)

It's not really future proofing as much as just a hobby I would say unless you utilize all the CPU's horsepower for things like editing or 3D work/rendering, since new stuff will come out and out do it like always more of a step up to the next tier. If you have the extra money for it and want an enthusiast's type system that's the only real reason most people get it that don't do hardcore work on it.

For a low cost board the MSI x99 SLI plus is a good choice.

For gaming, X99 will not benefit any more then a 4790K + Z97 unless you want to use the same PC+CPU for a looooong time.

You will want a whole new PC before a 4790K isn't enough for gaming.

just get the one that has the coolest featues you can find

gigabyte ud4 it's great.

if you can get a combo deal with cpu then it's even better.

here in social with microcetner an x99 build is only like 300 more than a 4790k build.

Still not worth it unless it's for rendering and editing really...

If it's for gaming, just a 4790K and add in an extra graphics card.

bf4 benefits from the 2 extra cores

likewise a few different tests have shown x99 rigs get better minimum FPS results (I believe Linus' test was one of these)

X99 rig will last at least a year (or maybe longer) then a z97 build because it has 2 extra cores. Also the ram can be reused in the future since its DDR4 or resold for a higher value.

Since 300 dollars isn't enough for an extra graphics card  (gtx 970 is 400, 980 is 600) it makes sense to go x99 imo.

[and i was in this exact position last month before i went x99]

Max difference between nearly every Haswell/refresh is 1-5FPS after OC

I'd take $300 over 1-5FPS any day. The X99 platform really shines with productivity, not gaming. It makes very little sense to go X99 if all you do is game and light usage. It would be much better to invest that $300 in a better, or additional GPU. Most GTX 970 offerings from the major manufacturers land in the $330-360 range, and I would expect some decent black Friday/cyber Monday deals coming up.

Other people would disagree with those results

Also those GTX 970 costs are pretax and I wouldn't expect any Black Friday deals on such a new and popular graphic card; the current Ubisoft game is as good as it gets. Speaking of which I'm glad to have all the power I have just to play Assassins creed at 1440p Ultra.

It's still a marginal comparison, and even with a 144Hz monitor you won't see a bit of difference barring any frame latency/stutter, and that's only with 1 game (BF4). The 4xx0k's perform better with poorly optimized (1-2 core) games like ARMA. It's generally a wash or marginal improvement one way or another depending on the game you play, something the average 60Hz player would never, ever notice.

I picked up my GTX 770 Windforce 4gb last year (black friday sale) for $346, current retail $379. 6mo. post release vs. 3mo. but I would be willing to bet there's going to be at least one online retailer offering a bundle deal or a discount for the 900 series cards.

In any case, suggesting 5820k (non-SLI) over a 4690k or 4790k (with SLI) based upon the price discrepancy, for a gaming PC, is slightly ridiculous. If they'd rather pocket that $300 or go X99 it's a wash either way IMO, but if it went to an additional gpu, SLI wins easily.

well you can't get a gpu--especially a gtx 980--for the cost difference between x99 and z97

certain games perform better with more cores

Plus when it comes to a full PC setup (monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc) the difference in cost is only like ~15% so the margin benefit still favors x99.

most importantly x99 will last quite a bit longer than z97--even just 1 year of extra usage justifies the cost difference.
