GTX 580 is still alive?

I was wondering if a 580 still can compete with the low end GPU's of the new generation. I was acually going for a 660Ti or 7950 but i found i 580 card on sale for less. What do you think? Is it stupid to buy a old MSI 580 3Gb lighting instead of a new 7950 or 660ti?

Performancewise probably yes, but you need to consider that they will use much more power and run hotter/louder because of that.

About 20-30% cheaper. The reason I don't give an exact price is that I live in Norway and we use a totally different type of coin. :P

i believe a 7870 xt should match a 580 ... if it cost less than a 7870xt then go for it to would run any game just not maxed out on the new and demanding ones

(1) high frame rate (2) ultra graphics settings (3) cheap...>> choose only two<<...

if it's never been done then i'm probably tryna do it. (((((((Bass so low it HERTZ)))))))

Actually, a GTX 660 is equivalent to a GTX 580, but the problem is the amount of VRAM, the average 580 has about 1.5GB of VRAM, and that isn't enough and will suck during games.

Note: During Battlefield 3, if you're running ultra settings in a map like Operation Firestorm then Battlefield 3 will use 1500MB (1.5GB), and as new games release, you'll need much more VRAM. 2GB is a must nowadays for modern Video Cards. I went with a 3gb card to futureproof, and if my 660ti can't handle it then I'll throw in another one. But VRAM doesn't multiply when you add another card.

There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I can run most anything just fine on my folding rig that has a 580 Lightning in it.  Still a very powerful card...

580 Extreme = 350 $

In that case I would go for the 580.

The performance difference between the cards is very little and most certainly not worth another $100
