I am thinking of buying 16GB of ram and allocating some to a ram disk (don't ask why, it's because i can). I am not interested in installing games on it for maps to load faster or whatever (i know 16 are little for something like that). I want to place chrome's cache and temp internet files on it. I am not doing any video stuff on the system or any heavy threaded workloads, just experimenting with the ramdisk and looking for other uses that will make my life faster (i want to live long though). I don't know what else i could use it for. Any suggestions?

Why do i always get blue screens? Why not a red one for a change?

You can use it to load entire programs into it. Some OSes can be loaded into RAM completely. But you can use AMD's RAMDisk program to do what you want to do.

Problem is i don't know what i want to do. Everyday browsing the internet and desktop is what i do most, some gaming from time to time. Could i use it to make something faster for light everyday usage?

You could have Chrome load into RAM automatically(if you can) so it opens instantly. Any programs you use on a daily basis can be loaded into RAM. And you have plenty, so RAM capacity shouldn't be an issue.

Programs i use daily: Chrome, uTorrent, Comodo Firewall, AVG, Razer Synapse, VLC, Rainmeter, Air Video Server and Steam. Would anything besides chrome be favored if loaded on the ramdisk? Mind you that it will be used in conjuction with my 840 Pro SSD. Also, i believe anything i want running on the ramdisk must be uninstalled and installed again on the ramdisk, right? Does AMD ramdisk have the option to save the image to my ssd every time i shut my system off? How about placing the page file on the ramdisk? I know that could sound stupid but it would limit my ssd writes for programs that require a page file (although i don't think i am running any).

You don't need to install everything on your ram disk, you can use your ram disk for cache, get a nice boost and not take away a lot of space from used application, remember that even if something is installed on your ram it will need ram to work, so you take even more space, so catche seems like a good idea for me, the problem is not all programs can use this, and you will have to find a way to do this for every single program you want to cache.

You could use a RAM caching software such as Fancycache to automatically put your most used programs in the RAM. I have used it and it speeds up my most used programs by quiet a bit.

Unfortunately the boot up and shut down times increase because the data needs to be copied from the RAM to the hard drive and vice versa.

Coming from an SSD, I don't really think it's worth it.

HUGE difference for me. My most played BF3 map loaded at least twice as fast.

Just installed AMD's Ramdisk and using 270mb as cache. My boot up and shutdown time is now faster and computer is more snappy. Connecting to servers is much faster as well as opening apps.

Just look at the benchmarks. Something 10 times faster than something else should show real-world differences.

Why do i always get blue screens? Why not a red one for a change?

I don't think it would be worth the effort. Small tasks like opening Chrome and navigating explorer are instantaneous for me... I mean really, RAMDisk for web browsing? Is the bottleneck really storage read speeds and not something else?

Is there an upper limit to the amount of RAM a RAM disk can have dedicated to? I'd think right now, yes.

In 64 bit systems there is no limit. http://www.softperfect.com/products/ramdisk/

32 bit there is a limit of ~3.5GB

  • 3 weeks later...

And then you have to wait for everyone else to load in AND the timer?

no BF3 is silly that way, if you load in quick you can set the mcoms before anyone else joins.
