GPU - change it to a GTX 970.

RAM - drop it down to 8GB.

PSU - drop it down to 600-700W.

CPU Cooler - change it to a H105 (Slightly new version if h100i)

First of all you don't need a 980 for 1080p, get a 970 instead. You don't need an 850W power supply, you will be good with 500.  Last time I checked (the prices are varying a bit so it's worth checking again) Windows 8.1 was a bit cheaper than 7, so look at that. You probably don't need 16gb ram, look at 8 instead. And don't get your peripherals all at once. Buy them gradually. Oh and get an i5 4690k instead of the i7.

And it's not going to make much of the dent but the H100i/105/110 comes with thermal paste pre-applied so you don't need to buy your own.

I suggest you swap out three things: CPU, RAM and PSU. If you're planning on gaming on your PC and PC gaming only, you won't greatly benefit from your build. You can also swap the 980 with two 970s. :)

keep the 250 gb ssd. When you run out it gets really annoying. Also the OP is getting a 144hz monitor therefore he has reason to get something more beefy than a 970.

But yeah you could probably get an i5 and you wouldn't notice much of a hit.

If you are thinking of possibly going SLI in the future then it might be a good idea to keep that power supply, its a pretty good price anyway.

I have r9 290s in crossfire and I struggle sometimes on my 144hz BenQ (I have a feeling I might need to overclock my CPU though). If you can afford the 980 you may as well get it otherwise you could always buy one 970 now and then another in a few months for SLI if you are not completely happy with the performance

Although can I ask what kind of games are you thinking on playing? Because when I play games such as AC and other similar adventure type games I regret buying the 144 hz 24 inch monitor. But if you plan of playing more BF3/4 or CSGO they are amazing.
