I7 or xeon?

Go to solution Solved by Geekazoid,

@sandergt500m, I have contemplated this decision also. I personally would say that if you're on a budget, go with the Xeon because it's a great price to performance ratio. But if you can afford it, go with the i7. More specifically the i7 4790K, because it has a higher base clock of 4.0GHz and, even if you don't OC it, it'll still give you quite a good amount of power for most heavy tasks like photo and video editing work. ;)

So i want to upgrade my cpu and motherboard.

I really want a mini Itx build so its easier to carry it around.

I will be gaming on it but also 3d cad software.

So the first thing i came up with was this.

I7 4790K

Asus Z97i-plus

430 euro's

But then i found this:

Gigabyte GA-H81N-D2H

Intel Xeon e3-1231 V3

300 Euro's

The Gigabyte supports the haswell refresh right out of the box.

If i would get the 4790K i would overclock it but its not something i would consider a must.

Any of you got some thoughts on this that can help me choose?

The price difference is 160 USD.

The i7 has a much higher base clock. Something to consider.

If you're doing more work than gaming I'd go Xeon.

More gaming than work, the i7.

Wel x99 would be at least 550 euro and micro atx instead of mini itx. Its just to much for me and i really want to carry the pc around.

So the only real benefit of the xeon for me is that i could get it right now. But i don't really see a problem in waiting 2 weeks. The work/game ratio would be 50/50. I think i'm gonna go for the i7 4790k.
