GTX 970 or GTX 980?

So I got a money for a GTX 970 and now I can't decide, to get it or wait one more mounth and get GTX 980.

My system is:

i7-870 OC @ 4Ghz

Corsair Vengeance 8gb 1820mhz CL8

Corsair H105

Corsair Force GS 240 SSD

Corsair CX600 PSU

Cooler Master 690 II

 

So my question is, to get GTX 970 and get AOC G2460PG 24" 144hz 1080P G-Sync monitor and live with it for a like 3 years until I will rebuild all my computer.

 

Or to get GTX 980 and  Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q 27" 144hz 1440P G-Sync monitor and upgrade my platform then DDR4 gets cheaper, I gues like in 1 year.

 

Question No. 2. How well single GTX 980 performs on 1440P? Will I be able to play all the games on MAX settings? Or better to get 1080 monitor?

A single GTX 980 can't deliver 144fps at 1440p on max settings. 

 

I have a reference GTX 980 and on Borderlands 2 with max everything I hit about 72 roaming with dips into the 40s during heavy fighting and even hit 20 FPS (for like a second) when a vehicle blew up in the badass crater. 

 

Switching to 1080p wouldn't double my FPS so i would still fail to hit 144fps; but it would probably reach 120fps chilling / 96 fps fighting. 

 

if you do go 980 make sure you get one with an aftermarket cooler and you overlock it. The performance on the reference cooler / stock clock rate is terrible for the cost compared to a 970.

 

 

P.S. On a sidetone are you okay with the quality of a TN panel? Cuz in terms of visuals I prefer my 96hz qnix tips to a 144hz TN panel. IMO only a hardcore competitive FPS gamer would really want 144hz.  I also prefer the resolution of 1440p over the FPS or 1080P i.e. 72 FPS 1440p > 120 FPS 1080p imo.

I would by only Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 or GTX 980. I love that cooler. For a monitor in my country (Lithuania) there is only 2 options of G-Sync monitors, that 24" AOC or 27" ASUS. No other options awailable. And yes, I'm happy with TN.

the 970 1080p 144hz will be the best bang for your buck but if you are really trying to maintain that high amount of FPS and prevent drops then spending the extra for a 980 may be worth it to you. 

 

just make sure you OC the 980 or else its not worth buying.

My 980 gets 100-110 FPS in BF4 Ultra after OC, on a 1080 Panel. So a 144Hz 1440 panel doesnt make a lot of sense to me, unless you play a bunch of CSGO.

 

I would go for the 980 and a 1080 monitor, or if budget is an issue a 970 and a 1080 monitor. But a 980 and a 60Hz 1440 monitor would be a good match as well.

Ok, so far I stll can't decide GTX 970 or GTX 980. One thing for sure, I will go with 1080P AOC monitor. I can aford GTX 970 today and a monitor after another payday. Or wait for another payday and get GTX 980. Also, will my CPU bottleneck 980? I'm thinking of GTX 980 because of DIRECTX12 is coming and and it will be similar as mantle, more GPU usage then CPU. If I go with 980 I will upgrade all my system, then M.2 and DDR4 gets cheaper...

Can I inquire why you absolutely must have a 144Hz G-Sync monitor?

 

Either way if you have the $ I would get a 980 (I did) over the 970 if you must have such a monitor.

As I sayed before, there is only two options of G-Sync monitors in my country, expencive 27" ASUS or 24" AOC. I will buy only G-Sync monitor. Period.

Ya but why do you want g-sync / 144hz? 

 

Like I said before, 1440p monitor with lower fps will visually look better. The difference extra frames above 60 makes is very little compared to resolution and screen quality. 

 

If I was in your shoes, which I used to be, I would get a non reference gtx 980 Ilike a g1 or a strix) and a quix 1440p samsung pls panel that clocks to 96 hz stable. 

 

are you a really hardcore bf4 player or something? cuz they are like the only ppl who would seriously care about getting an insanely high refresh rate,

And my favorite game is Assassins creed. I often play racing games or 3thd person games on my 40" smart tv.

then go with a gtx 980 and a qnix samsung pls 1440p monitor. 

 

144hz and TN will ONLY give you GREAT results in twich games like BF4 and CS but at the cost of VERY POOR screen quality.

1440p, IPS, and "only" 96hz will give you GOOD results in everything, like borderlands, assassins creed, racing games, etc.
