im buying a new gaming pc but im tore between 3 options

1 a 5960x with 1 gtx 980

2 a 5960x with 2 gtx 970s in sli

3 a 4790k with 2 gtx 980s in sli

it will be mainly used in minecraft but also has to preform in ultra settings in any other game 30fps +

it will also be used in a environment where recording is taking place

i read that minecraft doesn't really support sli and it is more cpu heavy than gpu heavy so that is why the 8 core extreme edition is on the list.

thanks for reading and please give a response :)

Why even consider the 5960x. You need strong cores for minecraft not lots. You could still go X99 though but get the 5820k instead. You can do 3-way SLI with this and you got 6 cores that can overclock pretty darn far with a bit of luck.

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

you dont need a 5960x unless you are an extreme video editor...

A 980 is overkill for minecraft

Option 3 would be a lot more logical to get than either 1 or 2. Unless you are doing HEAVY video editing/production you really don't need the top of the line extreme edition. The i7 will be fine for anything you throw at it really. If you need the extra CPU power you can always get a 5820K which is well priced and will give you the extra 2 cores/4 threads which will help with video editing and CPU intensive tasks.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

3

minecraft cannot use 16 threads, it can use 4.

and just remember that spending $4000 on a PC does not get you any subscribers, if thats what youre trying to do.

You know that the 5960x costs $1000+ and the gpu(s) cost around $700-800 plus all the rest of the stuff so you're looking at an easy 3k build for the first two. With decent stuff though, but option 3 would be the best, oven one 980 will do, and you'll save yourself 700ish bucks.

 CPU Intel Core i7-4790K  | Motherboard Asus Sabertooth z97 Mark 1 | RAM Corsair Dominator Platinum 16gb 1866mhz | GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 980 w/ ACX 2.0 | Case Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window | Storage Western Digital BLACK SERIES 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM + Samsung 840 EVO 250GB |  PSU Corsiar RM750 | Display(s) Some Acer Things | Cooling Corsair H100i + 5x Noctua NF-F12 industrial 120mm fans(they are freaking load) | Keyboard Corsair Vengeance K95 |  Mouse Logitech G502 | Sound Audio-Technica AD900x + 02+ODAC +AT2020 | OS Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro

Option 3 is the more logical of the three if you're only gonna play Minecraft. It'll probably play everything else on ultra for the next 4 years or so anyways.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

they'll both be the same but mc doesnt use sli/cf, you should theoretically be gpu limited seeing as it distributes threads properly now.
id go 5820k and sli 970's though personally.

Unless you plan to play something like FAR CRY 4 in Ultra High settings on 4k then Option 3 is the best.

If you do want to play in maybe around High Settings on 4k then Option 2 is the best.

This video may help you make your decision:

HO MY GOD do we actually have a user willing to build a 2500$+ X99 machine with GTX 980's to play minecraft?! holy balls...just ...oh my god where to start!

Just get a core i5-4690k, a Z97 motherboard and a GTX 970 and you'll max out minecraft BIG TIME. i mean you'll be the master of minecraft.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

my suggestion still remain, you wont find any better in regards to gaming...an 8 core 16 thread x99 cpu will perform exactly the same or even worse than an i5 due to lower clockspeed.

i see where you are coming from, but i plan to do some serious overclocking to get that thing to 4.7ghz - again something i didn't mention before, ugh what's wrong with me

less cores/threads to deal with means higher overclocking potential one should say.

There's a reason as to why the i7-5960X ships at 3.00ghz and the core i5-4690k at 3.9ghz...

the i7-4790K has a baseclock of 4.0ghz and boost to 4.4ghz out of the box...
