Thunderbolt 2 already allows this and provides 70-90% the performance of a desktop depending on card and workflow.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7987/running-an-nvidia-gtx-780-ti-over-thunderbolt-2

With Thunderbolt 3, I suspect that the current 70-90% external performance will be more in the lines of just 90+%.

wow, well that answers my question of "why can't the m-pci-e slot in a laptop be used for something else" Turns out you can use it for something :D

Home is where the heart my desktop is.

Oh man, all students in Ireland using cheap Dells or Acers are rich people. :o   :P  haha

I do agree though but for some this might be nice. Get an ultra book for college, or travel, and when hop plug it into your External GPU.

Saves having a separate desktop, although this is very unlikely in any case haha.

Seems like a lot of effort, still think a small form factor desktop would be better.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Come on guys, a small form factor desktop or itx thing is NOWHERE near the same idea as a laptop, you still have to carry a screen, keyboard and mouse, and it has no battery life, it is heavier and less portable

The whole E GPU idea is a great one, Makes a lot of sense for me, on the go you have a decent laptop, take it to work, on the train, to your friends house etc, enough performance for a basic gaming and video editing and then you have the dock, when you get home you connect it up and you can do your serious gaming connected to your serious display

I am looking forward to the GS30 with its external GPU

Thats exactly how I used to think back in like 2006-07ish. We live in a world with smarphones and tablets now, being able to have mobility AND power for later isn't nearly as important now that I have a smartphone and possible a tablet later on. A portable desktop for 'friend's house' trips it's better suited as an itx build (though really let's be honest, most of us here with post counts beyond 3k don't really have enough "friends" to hang out with for this to really matter anyway) it's good enough and your smartphone will do vs lugging around even a very light weight ultrabook, more so that we have the in between form factors of phablets and tablets.

I take a gaming laptop with me everywhere, I use it at work, I take it on the road, I take it on holiday, I take it to LAN, I take it friends

I cannot play BF4 on my Phone, I cannot play Crysis 3 on my tablet, Laptop sales, especially gaming laptops sales are still strong, especially with the thin light machines

Besides people with tablets and smarthones still have PCs and I bet many still have regular laptops, the idea is, that you have a lightweight long battery life machine, which is very capable on its own, but when serious gaming comes, you connect it to your dock and it access more power
