Based on your experience which one would be ideal for a college student?

Features I'm looking for

- type essays

- use excel alot

- battery life is important to get me through my classes

- minimal setup time

Any opinions or tips will be appreciated

you're going to want something with good battery life also running windows.

So none of those.

If you can afford it definitely X1 Carbon, but if you really want great battery life and portability and don't mind sacrificing some power for cost, then check out something like the Asus Transformer Book T100

An X1 Carbon can do 9 hours of battery life according to Lenovo, so I wouldn't exactly call that bad.

I have a Y50, and I've never been able to get over 2 and half hours of battery even on all minimum settings while web browsing/using word

Y50 was never really designed with great battery life in mind. X1 Carbon was.

Well I guess it's different than the Y40 then.  I can easily get 5 hours of battery life on a regular day of classes.
